The Good Life - an update! - photo heavy...

Recommended Posts

A roller-coaster few days - and good and bad news :?

All the sheep farmers will tell you that sheep have one main aim in life, and that is to die :?

It's true  and they never understand you're doing something to help them and not trying to eat them!

I know the normal way to get that to happen is by skinning the lost lamb & covering the new one in the skin, but does it happen without this extreme method occasionally?

What we do at the farm is get all the gooey lambing juices from the ewe you want to foster a lamb onto, and cover the lamb in them. Put your arm up the ewe so that she contracts and thinks she is having another lamb, and then rub your hands all over the lamb so it gets the smell of the ewe. Give that lamb to the ewe to lick off first, and then her actual lamb, then she will think she has had twins and that they are both hers.

If the ewe rejects the lamb, we sometimes put her in stocks so that the lambs can drink from her, and then because they will eventually smell of her, she accepts them as her own :) (unless she sits on them which happens! )

Lesley, have you had the other ewes jabbed or checked to see if they're affected with toxoplasmosis. Sorry to hear about the lambs, and I hope the ewe recovers and that the rest of the ewes lamb with no problems :D

No, we haven't, the Vet thought it might just be that ewe. We will vaccinate them later this year before the Ram comes to visit.

BUT.........we did have an Easter present!!! :D

We'd had a big family get-together and as the last few were leaving last night the sheep were making a racket. We went to look and there was a lamb!! 5 days early!

The ewe didn't want us anywhere near and so we left her for a while. We went out again at 11.30 and she had a second water bag showing. She didn't want us near her at all and was careering around the small paddock area we'd (thankfully!!!!) made on Saturday. Carl was ....erm......very much the worse for wear (and I was very annoyed with him  ) so I decided that the best thing was to leave her to get on with it! - and keep fingers crossed of course!

We went out early and there she was - in the fog - with two little boys! We manged to get her and the others into the barn - sheep rodea......all pregnant sheep leaping up onto a waist high straw bale to get away from us! - and then we managed to get her and her babies into the pen and the others back out, she's the most cantankerous (sp) sheep we have so I'm glad we managed it!

Photos are poor - it was very foggy!

Is he one of those annoying people who never gets a hangover?

Yes! - and he is just unbearably silly when he's had a drink....or two....or three.....(hundred  )

:lol::lol::lol::lol:

We have a friend like that, it's so annoying as he'll be just as drunk as me the night before, but then the next morning he sings at the top of his voice  .

We are watching one particular sheep at the moment - their behaviour changes......but they can behave differently for around three days! The official date I have for her is Saturday but she was very odd yesterday so we moved her into the barn as it was forecast heavy rain overnight. Poor lambs if they are born outside in driving, freezing, rain :(

Next would have been the ewe who lost her lambs so we may have a quiet few days.
