The Dogmother Posted April 29, 2009 Share Posted April 29, 2009 No, she hasn't - I'm very sad as she is the loveliest sheep and we'll be taking her only lamb away from her in a few months time Ooooh, she really is the sweetest ewe and so good tempered. This is the premature one - we're still keeping them in the main part of the barn until we know she's not going to abandon the lamb while she goes off to eat....as she did last year. She seems to be making a much better job of it this year. ....and we had a first egg from one of the new Marans yesterday - a gorgeous dark brown.... ....and, we also lost the new Whitestar No obvious reason - fine in the morning but dead by the afternoon...... Lesley Posted April 30, 2009 Author Share Posted April 30, 2009 Sometimes it's very hard, we've just had a close bereavement (if that makes sense?) and we're finding that very difficult to deal with - we have some totally surreal moments We did realise that today, we've been here three years!! We completed the sale on the 27th and moved in on the 30 th April/May 1st. I can't think of a better place to be when feeling sad and we wouldn't want to be anywhere else. At the moment I so want to move away from here - you really aren't helping! OH loves Hereford and around there. We have also checked out Warwickshire, Worcester, Gloucester, Dorset and Devon. My brother lives in Wiltshire, but as long as you don't mind the tanks, fighter planes and all that, then it isn't so bad! Still a couple of years to go - I'm counting. On the 18th May this year I have been keeping chickens for 3 years! Lovely little lamb, one of the cutest things I have ever seen! Sorry to hear about the White Star, especially as it was so sudden. We lost two in a week last month, with no apparent reason - both had been with us for at least a year, both had finished moulting and were well with good appetites and then three days apart we found them dead in the cube. I remember when our first few went, they were obviously ill and it was really worrying, but the last four or five that have gone just seem to have dropped off their perches with no reason. Lesley Posted May 1, 2009 Author Share Posted May 1, 2009 Hi Sarah - the lady with Zwartbles is very local to here - about 15 mins drive away. We're still waiting for the last ewe - but she will be waiting until 7.45 tomorrow morning......when we need to leave at 8.15 to go to the Farmers' Market I've got her due date as Sunday. At least she didn't have it today and I managed to clean the house We'll be having a lot of visitors tomorrow - I was about to tell them to bring a duster with them We let out the ewe who had her little girl a week early this morning - she made a beeline for the remaining pregnant one and started head-butting her again....... and it wasn't just to move her on.....she followed her all over the paddock We put her back into isolation... When the last one has her lamb we'll put her in the pen and let the other one back out. They obviously don't like each other - but we didn't notice any trouble before...... We checked this morning and she does have milk so perhaps she will produce tonight We have a funeral to go to on Wednesday - perhaps she'll wait until then As long as it's not complications at 8am then she'll just have to get on with it We let the calves out in the small paddock with the old ladies yesterday - they've spent 5 weeks getting to know each other...........but each was terrified of the other We ended up leading the calves back into the barn but they now have the run of the whole barn. The old sheep spent the night out in the field but this morning we let them back in with the ewes and their lambs but then decided that there wasn't enough grass in the section of paddock they had access to so we let them have the whole paddock. Soooooooo, if the last ewe now starts labour, we have to first 'find our sheep' - she has plenty of hiding places now I asked questions on River Cottage about calves and sheep.....I'd better go and see if they've chewed my ears off yet!
