Lesley Posted April 27, 2009 Author Share Posted April 27, 2009 ....or River Cottage! I did go and check - no more lambs....and we've left her alone. Shetlands quite often have just one lamb. Nothing was happening with the others so I went to Aquafat Carl was here until 10.45 and I was back at midday. By the time we'd fed all the animals, I'd been to an hour of Aquafat and come home and done some weeding in the polytunnel.....I was shattered. It was raining so I snuggled up with the dog and did nothing..... for a whole hour Then it was back to making another gallon of milk.....looking at sheepy bottoms......feeding piggies.......blah!....blah! We have two ewes left to lamb - both Shetlands. They both look like they're carrying twins but who knows They spend about two weeks looking like they're going to produce - and then still catch us out The last dates I have are 3rd and 4th of May - but they will probably be earlier. She ahd a little boy at about 7am - I usually check the sheep at 6.30 but I didn't get up until 7.10 this morning......nearly went out in my nightie but decided to get dressed first - a good job because I didn't get back in until 11.00! We took Skye through to the other pen and sorted her out with food and water - had a quick look at the lamb....a little boy! We're hoping she has a second as we really want her to have a ewe lamb to increase our flock. Skye is our friendliest ewe and we want her to pass that on. We then managed to bring the last pregnant sheep into the maternity ward area - her mother came with her but we eventually managed to get her back in the other paddock. We've bodged together a couple of hurdles to keep the pregnant one away from the two with lambs as she was hassling them. She's not too happy at being shut in the barn so we're hoping she produces her lamb soon. Skye is the only ewe to have her lamb on the day I have written down Here she is..... still licking her lamb clean..... And, here are the three together......two new mums at the back and the one remaining pregnant sheep at the front..... We're fast running out of buckets and holders for feed and water! The calves were late being fed - and the piggies were even later They were all fed and watered by 9.30 though. Still watching - and hoping - for a second lamb....... BUT such hard work At least it's given me such a wonderful vicarious experience. One thing ... I'd like to know how and why you chose those particular breeds of sheep? I spotted some Zwartbles in the nearby fields and was looking forward to seeing their lambs but they all disappeared That lamb is soooooo sweet. We weren't going to have sheep for a while after we moved here, we were going to start slowly and just have pigs and more hens. We went to buy a broody hen from someone who was downsizing their smallholding......and came away having agreed to take on her 6 Shetlands We lost three of those last year due to Clostridial problems - leaving us with the two old ladies and two young ewes who had been born here to the younger ewes who later died. We wanted to stick to Shetlands as they are fairly small but last year we bought in some more ewes and a couple of ram lambs to grow on for meat. . We went to look and fell in love with the Kerry Hills and their zebra like faces The Herdwick came along with them as i love black sheep We went to another smallholding to buy a hen and came back with two mad Dexters We've learned to say 'NO' now.........otherwise we'd have had a 30 year old cow palmed off on us - they see us coming ....and I love Zwartbles......the lady who keeps a few sheep next door to the man we bought Kerry Hills from has Zwartbles......
