Lesley Posted January 8, 2009 Author Share Posted January 8, 2009 Tom was buried in the little orchard today - and we had a tree waiting to go in so a new Blenheim apple tree is next to him. Carl's leg is much better now....... ...but, we've just had a major disaster here - a burst pipe in the Brewery. Our 'resident plumber' (my son - who doesn't live here, but had been here doing some work for us) had just left to take Lauren and Jake home .Carl went down with Jazz to close all the gates and heard running water. He dashed in for all the wellies and I phoned my son - he'd just reached home! He came straight back and brought his girlfriend with him. Carl had located the burst pipe and was holding the fittings together until son arrived. We've spent two hours paddling in freezing cold water. We had to move stuff which was on the floor - 6 large bags of sheep fleece and 4 sacks of potatoes were on a pallet and water was just lapping on to them. We have the fleece in the bathroom and potatoes in the freezer room. Son had to take a chisel and hammer to the walls and make holes for the water to go through - the holes had to go through the pvc wall liners as well Two hours sweeping water out is good exercise - no need to go to the gym now for a while My son is coming back tomorrow to help me clean it all up. Not quite as cold and wet as I was when the pipes burst in the old Farm Shop early last year - when I had to don waterproofs and use a dustbin lid to deflect the water as I was here on my own then Luckily, dinner was in a pan and, surprisingly, wasn't burned so at least we have something warm to eat. Not that one is much better than the other, but at least a frozen one can be lagged in future. I hope the fleeces & potatoes aren't damaged & nothing else got wet either - what luck with the supper though ! Mum informed me while we were waiting for the plumber (when she brought out biccies and chocolate - "have some, have some") that she thought we already had our smallholding and I wouldn't be able to manage one because I keep eating chocolates!!!! I didn't say anything but thought that my weight would drop because I would be working outside and burning calories, would not have choccies to hand whilst working outside and probably not likely to afford choccies! She then said that I wouldn't be able to go on holidays or have time to persue other hobbies such as my quilting! I am sure you would disagree with the last comments! You just get on with what you feel is right & ignore her - easier said than done I know Any steps we take in the right direction are better than none at all I think, I hope it all goes well for you. And re the quilting, you can do the recycling bit & use anything you have/are given even if you can't afford to buy new fabrics etc,. Don't Mums talk utter poppycock sometimes ! She probably wishes she'd had the time/opportunity when she was younger (I'm trying to think positively as a NY Resolution, so am applying that here too !!!) Chook n Boo Mum Posted January 12, 2009 Share Posted January 12, 2009 I have that "problem" too, but not just fabric....and came back from Mum's last night with 3 bags of various fabrics (plus some certificates & oddments) from projects I had started whilst still living at home or leftovers from other projects...including what looks like about a mile of sunshine yellow felt DS fell about laughing at my "what on earth is this from" explosion! Other than that, felt petalled sunflowers for decorations, child's fancy dress - duckling or chick, backing for a table runner or sunny table settings. Stick some on plain boxes for storage in the children's bedrooms. Um, now I am stumped. I suggest going on the Crafty Fingers forum and watch loads of wonderful ideas bounce back to you from the clever ladies (and lads) on there. Sorry Koojie - I missed this the last few days erm.......I have to admit that I did think my weight would reduce once i was doing more.........but I always seem to be making cake for big hunky men working here - and processing all that meat into pies, sausages....... Holidays are difficult - and a bit of a shock because we used to go away about 8 times a year Hobbies are no problem - I've retiled the kitchen, painted all the cupboards and am doing a kitchen make-over at this moment (or will be when I get off here!) It looks lovely but we don't have a proper, underground, water supply to the animals so we have to make sure the sheep and hens and ducks all have enough water, so it is hard work for us. Carl will have to work from home today so at least he's here to sort out water. The sheep have some water in the barn which was still just about unfrozen this morning. The sheep had slept in the barn but were out in the paddock when we went to feed them. We've shut them in the big barn so that they don't have problems with their feet - not sure if that is strictly necessary but we're not taking the risk The main road - ungritted Jazz - catching snowballs The wood store Eglus - protected by the protection pens, so not much snow.
