Fizzle Knit
I've looked into facebook before but got scared off because you have to use your real name. Is it all a bit scary or am I being daft? I have my reservations too. I signed up a while ago to see what it was all about and duly entered my details including date of birth. Later I decided I didn't want those details on there (even though they weren't on public display) and tried to change my birth date, and put in something like 1900 (or the earlie4st year they had available). It immediately pinged back at me "That's not your real birth date!" and wouldn't let me change! Also I had one friend on there and because she was my friend I also had access to her friends profiles and her friends' friends, and her friends' friends' friends - etc and that made me feel uncomfortable. I think it can be a great resource, but it just isn't for me - I'll stick with Omlet!
Guest
You have to use your name and anyone can search up your name BUT you keep your profile private and then they can't see anymore than your name and your picture - it doesn't have to be a picture of you and you don't have to put a picture on at all if you don't want to . If someone wants to be your friend they have to make a request and only once you have approved them as a friend can they see your full profile. It is a great way to keep in touch with your friends. You could NOT see the profiles of her friends just becasue you were friends with her. You could see their profiles because they hadn't made them private. You can only read full profiles if you have been accepted as a freind OR the person has not made their profile private. There are a lot of people out there who havn't made their profiles private - including a few of my colleagues who subsequently wondered why their pupils knew so much about them! crazygal
I've never seen the point of facebook I'm afraid I have no difficulty keeping in touch with my friends- some I see everyday anyway , others I text/email/phone to make arrangements who live far away... I read a good article in a magazine the other week about us living in an age of too much information, where people feel the need to let the world know every minutuae (sp!) of their lives, and whereby everyone HAS to be in touch ALL of the time. In a way its like there is no proper freedom anymore, as you can't go out without your mobile- heaven forbid someone might want to get in touch...you must make yourself available. Mind you, I love getting texts (and paradoxically its the friends I see everyday who text most!), the friends who live long distance pick up the phone. miffy
phew.... so glad I'm not the only one, I feel very uncomfortable on facebook. Whats all this poking and snowballing about? I shall stick with the forum too,
Lesley
I did register as a work colleague moved to Florida and had a Facebook account - I can't be bothered to use it though....and I don't understand all the 'poking' and 'wall' stuff either....and haven't had time to find out. I'd rather stay here as well
Egluntyne
I haven't the time to spare for one thing. There are some pretty nasty people out there and some very dubious groups. Best avoided methinks. I'll stick with this forum.
Tina C
I signed up when redfrock started an omleteers group but did nothing with it for a while. I too was a bit nervous. Then a couple of friends and a former work mate sent friend requests and I started to get more interested. Its nice to see what some of the friends I can't keep in touch with on a day to day or week to week basis are up to (especially the ones overseas) A few relatives are now also my friends, so its a way of keeping 'in tune' with them even though we don't have much in common. I have ignored some friend requests - eg playground mums - that have only come through because they are a friend of a friend. I couldn't cope with having hundreds of 'friends'. Also, sometimes I think people send friends requests just to have a little nose round.... But Little C is my friend now . (Omleteer friends are always welcome) Clare, just make sure you keep an eye on your privacy - eg only let friends see your photos - or you can limit access to photos to just certain friends, for example. Guest
As far as privacy is concerned - my pole dancing video is on there - only viewable by my friends - if not it would be all over YouTube by now and the world would be laughing! Rhapsody
You put your real name up but info is only available if you choose to accept someone as a friend. I have got back in touch with some old uni friends this way and I'm delighted as I never would have found them again otherwise.
Blackrocksrock
I did not do facebook but I did bebo and I had all sorts trying to become my friend - people I had never heard of before so I came out of it - it is very scary
chelsea
im a real scaredy cat and worrier but have not had a problem with facebook. I havent got my photo as my profile picture and only invited friends can read my information. You decide who becomes your friend and I havent had odd requests from people I dont know. I've found people with whom I lost contact years ago, I love it!
Ain't Nobody Here
I can't get into the way of using it either . I only really use it to play Scrabble. I do have a look every now and then but don't bother with any of the applications (sorry to everyone who sends me requests ). I spend so long on here, I really would get nothing done ever again if I was on there too.
jlo
I joined last year when I came back from a trek up Kilimanjaro - we all thought that it would be a good way of keeping in touch and it has worked. However, I spend much more time on this forum and get a bit fed up with all the poking and hugging that goes on on Facebook. Still enjoy it though! This link sums it up for me. edited to say that there is a small amount of profanity in the clip!) Edit by Sheila; Sorry, I have removed the link because of the language on the comments page as well as the clip.
Guest
I think it's a great way to keep in touch with all the lovely friends I've made through Omlet. I wish you'd send me some chickens for my farm though!!!!! you can control who sees your info and it's as private or as public as you want to make it. There are nasty people out there but the good thing with facebook is, you can keep them out!

Cate in NZ
You don't have to use your real name. Most of my facebook friends do use their real name admittedly, but one of my sisters uses a fictional name, from a character in one of her all time favourite books, and my daughter uses a version of her name that you have to know her to associate with her (if that makes sense). And someone else keeps coming up on my "people you may know " list and it took me ages to work out who it was as she appears to have used her business name. It is harder for people to find you if you don't use your real name or photo, but that really can be a good thing . You do have to register your correct email address, but that's not displayed, and you do not have to put in your date of birth. I have added my day & month of birth, but not the year. And of course, as everyone else has said...keep your profile private Like anything you can get as involved as you like, personally I steer clear of most of the games and some of the endless hugging and poking seems a bit silly to me. Oh, and I never watch any youtube vids posted on the Wall, cos I don't have the broadband speed to allow me to do it. But I'm living 13,000 miles from my nearest and dearest.....for me FB is a real lifesaver. Phone calls are expensive unless you have skype, and relatively few of my friends do have skype , and time differences make phone conversations more difficult to arrange. So phone for Mum & MIL, email for those that don't FB, and some great FB chat with everyone else. Keeps me connected and tbh for me it's worth it's weight in gold. Omlet's different, more anonymous I suppose, but that's fine. The difference is that FB people I know, really do know and have met almost all of my FB friends in real life, just a few Omlet friends on my FB list who I've never actually met. Omlet's about chattering chickens, weather, life in general with a group of very lovely, but nonetheless fairly random strangers. Of course I've met and made some very good real friends on Omlet.....and I'm certainly not knocking it, otherwise no way would I have spent so long on here over the years, but as I see it they serve different functions, and nowt wrong with that. Horses for courses I say
little chickadee
I've found a few of my friends on there and it's nice to see their photos. I can see that it is a good way of keeping in touch when you don't live close to each other. I'm sure I would have been better at keeping in touch with my college friends if facebook had been around back then actually. It doesn't look quite so scary now that I've looked into it and I've made my profile private. Just hoping that a couple of people I used to know don't try to get in contact with me
fowlbird
I did register as a work colleague moved to Florida and had a Facebook account - I can't be bothered to use it though....and I don't understand all the 'poking' and 'wall' stuff either....and haven't had time to find out. I'd rather stay here as well it's the reason why I left facebook before - some friends were poking and sending gifts and inviting me to join groups etc and it took hours to respond. I've reactivated my account but I've told everyone that I'm not responding to anything like that at all... I joined the Omlet group and a couple of related groups plus a couple to do with friends but that's it. You don't have to use your real name.
