Fenton Blues lay blue eggs I think and Columbines have a high percentage chance of laying green or blue eggs but I am not knowlegable enough to know if they are both hybrids or not

My local garden centre sells Columbines and the sign says that they are ok for experienced owners but are too flighty for first time owners (obviously does not apply to you!)

So sorry to hear about your dad :(

I was reading about Columbines myself today http://www.glencroftpoultry.co.uk/hen_house.htm

Made the mistake of clicking on your link. I want them all!

Me too - and I got a lovely purple Eglu from Santa for intros/isolations, so I am raring to shop!

Debbie, I'm also very sorry to hear about your Dad. A new chook sounds a very fitting memorial.

so sorry to hear about your dad... lovely that you want to remember him with a chook :)

we were forced to buy eggs because none of our girls are laying - I bought blue eggs from Waitrose which were laid by Old Cotswold Legbars from Clarence Court

I can't say what the eggs tasted like because they were gone before I got a go at them

Debbie,

I believe Glencroft are agents for the Fenton Blue (they supply my local poultry centre) so it would be worth ringing them to see if they supply direct to the public as they are based in Yorkshire.

So sorry about your Dad, such a sad time for you and your family

Jo

*Edited for accuracy - Glencroft didn't create the breed!

They do deal direct with the public we got all our ladies from there.

All their birds are in great shape. I intend to go back there when we get some more. So I would recomend them.

Sorry to hear about your Dad, Debbie.

I have 2 Columbines (they are the same as jasmines & Skylines) & one lays green & one lays blue eggs.

The only way to guarantee blue eggs is to get a pure breed I think - a Cream Legbar or Auracana.

Good luck with it.

If you can manage to get 2 hybrids then your introductions will be easier plus you will have more chance of the fancy coloured eggs 8)

I have a blue egg laying Columbine, she's not particularly flighty, just a bit highly strung and stroppy...........you should have seen how eggcited she was at the sight of the mash/raisin/ sweetcorn bowl this morning!

I have 2 Lavender Araucanas and am still wating for my blue eggs!

I think the Columbine gets their egg colour and highly strung personalities from them. My two are the biggest wusses ever!

So sorry to hear about your Dad, Debbie. As I posted on another thread, my brother lost his FIL on Christmas Eve too. Must be awful for you, but what a lovely way to remember him by. *hugs*

I got my latest two chooks from Glencroft just before Christmas.

I would also have liked a blue egg-layer, and there were plenty of Columbines there. However I also have a 7-year-old helper who likes to handle the hens and hand-feed them.

I asked about the temperament of the Columbines and was told that they are variable, like their egg colour, and can be 'scatty' and difficult to handle, although some get quite tame.

I brought home a Mendlesham Blue and a Coral Nick, who are already very tame and easy to handle even for small chicken keepers, but sadly they won't lay blue eggs. However even with a Columbine there is a fair chance of getting one who doesn't lay blue, but another colour. They are very bonny hens, though.

Sad news about your Dad, Debbie.

sorry to hear about your dad

we have a 'merrydale crested' a hybrid from merrydale poultry (leicester). they have an 80% chance of laying either blue or green eggs (ours lays green).. the don't always have them in stock, but if you email them then they might let you know when they will next have some?

hope that helps, x

I bought two Columbines in November. I knew they mightn't be the friendliest birds but given that we had plenty of others who were happy to be manhandled by the kids it wasn't a big deal. Catherine was the soppiest most affectionate chicken we've ever had but she died after a month  Freya, the remaining Columbine, is very nervous indeed but is gradually coming round with time. She'll eat from my hand now. It's lovely to see her character slowly emerging. I'm getting to know a very sweet little girl. No eggs yet but fingers crossed they're blue or green!

Mother Hens Poultry will have more Columbines at the end of January and I've already reserved two more. They really are stunning birds and the kids and I are so looking forward to pretty eggs.
