Egluntyne
....at Egluntine Towers. Came down to a freezing house and the central heating boiler, which was perfectly OK at 1am has conked out. Grrrr. The resident plumber is .....erm.....still asleep Have been on hold with British Gas for ages. Not impressed with their 24/7/365 claims at all. *Huh* Thank goodness for the 2 open fires. Blackrocksrock
Hope you get it sorted out - we had a frozen pipe in the loft resulting on no shower yesterday but came back about 11pm last night and to-day its fine - need more insulation up there methinks. Happy New Year
ubereglu
Aw, I know how you feel, the weekend before Christmas the boiler broke again. Luckily a few weeks before the boiler was serviced and he said that that part was likely to go soon, (pilot light) when he was replacing the gas valve. Fortunately he was able to find the part and fitted it on 23rd December for us for £10!

Guest
oooh poor you. This thread reminds me that we are heading back to chilly England tomorrow - today was a COLD Florida day with temps down in the 60's and a wind too. I hope I got the programming right for the Aga - it went off when it should have, I just hope it came back on when it should.
Egluntyne
My resident plumber jiggled it a bit yesterday afternoon before he went to play football. I twiddled with it again in the evening......and it came on! It came on again this morning, so fingers crossed.....don't want to jinx it. The Dogmother
What a joy to have a son who is a plumber I have told Rosie to s"Ooops, word censored!" any ideas of uni and to get a trade
Omletina Kyckling
You're right there, Claret! My dad was a plumber, and had to go through the slump in the 70s/80s where he went from 15 men working for him, to just two of them, so when big bruv wanted to go into the business in the mid/late 80s, dad told him to think nothing of it, and shipped him off to university to do a geography degree. Big bruv has since gone from job to job and is now a car trader. He always says he wishes that he'd ignored dad's wise words and gone into plumbing as he'd be a lot better off today!! Glad your boiler is sorted, Egluntine!
The Dogmother
One of my 'things to do' when Rosie is big enough to leave on her own, is to do courses in Bricklaying, electrics and plumbing.. I love doing DIY and hate to pay someone to do something that I might be able ot do myself Lesley has a useful son too.
ubereglu
What a joy to have a son who is a plumber I have told Rosie to s"Ooops, word censored!" any ideas of uni and to get a trade Now a plumber...that would be useful, but I really can't imagine Rosie being one! Even though the amount of debt I will pick up by going to uni will be huge I still want to...I want to go into optometry...first I shall have to take my GCSEs though and then A levels! The Dogmother
Ahh, now that's where you're wrong Liz.. she's like me and loves doing practical stuff However, she is really bright, so will probably be uni material if she decides to go. This is one of the reasons why my resident plumber refused to stay on at school....even though he got very respectable GCSE's. His brother, who has a degree in Law and a further professional qualification, can't get the job he wants for love nor money, because of the slump, and is just biding his time in a low paid paralegal job. He's enjoying the work, but it isn't what he wants to do long term. He has said numerous times that if he had his time again he would have gone into a trade.....he might yet. ubereglu
The problem with law is that you have to be the best in order to get a job and there are so many law students that it makes it hard to find a job. Trades and apprenticeships are now getting harder to find as well because of the downturn and the employers can't afford to train them. Everyone is going through hard times at the minute, but it will pick up again, it's just going to take time.
Chickpea
I went through uni and did media, only to wind up training as a gardener three years later...oh well, handy to get onto gardeners world me thinks!
ubereglu
Hmm, maybe actually. You could sort out all the technical problems with their cameras and things!
Lesley
Lesley has a useful son too. Yes, I taught him everything I know I've always done my own DIY, and previously worked with my Ex as a plumber - I can't bear to pay people for something I can do. ubereglu
No I don't. Sorry if it appears that way. I was just watching a programme on TV the other day about how a lot of law graduates go into things and only about a third are successful as there's so much competition. Also, many lawyers worked in partnership with estate agents when houses were being sold, but due to a fall in the housing market there's not as much going on and so not a demand there for them.
