Taking the chooks on holiday!

Recommended Posts

We decided that we couldn't face going away for Christmas and leaving the girls behind. So... we borrowed Lynn's eglu (there was no way the cube would fit in the car!), put the girls in it and loaded the car.

First the girls went to west London on Xmas day. We forgot to take a photo, but they saw lots of birdies and met a squirrel for the first time.

Then on Boxing Day, we took them to the West of England:

Doesn't the eglu fit perfectly on the in-laws grassy bit?

They had an absolute whale of a time - rolling around in the borders and eating my father-in-law's pansies (oops). He responded by waving a box of Paxo at them. They didn't care, they were on holiday!

They also go to meet the niece and nephew:

How cute?

The chooks were good as gold in the car, just roosting and sleeping - even over some big bumps in the country roads. We won't be able to take them away once they're laying as they'll need so much more food and water, but I'm so glad we did it this time - it has made them much more confident hens. Thanks to Lynn for the eglu!

Having now got 7 girls myself I am thinking I won't be able to go away much these days as my parents who used to chicken sit are now getting a bit too infirm, my neighbours are quite elderly too. I know there is a chicken sitting section but wonder if others are now thinking that they won't be able to get away so easily (it was much easier when I only had 2)?

I've only got 2 chooks but still don't like leaving them to go on hols. So far have only spent one night away from them

I have a lady that I pay who looks after my two guinea pigs and used to take care of my old cat when he was alive, but don't know how much experience she has with chickens :( Probably none :?

I think that's a marvellous idea, and I love the pictures of the chickens, particularly the one of them on the patio looking around your inlaws garden. They look ever so happy! and definitely in holiday mode.

We took a budgie on holiday once. Taking your chickens definitely egglipses that.

I did suggest to DH that we took the chooks away with us, only camping, but never got as far as phoning the campsite to find out their thoughts on the matter following his expression :shock::lol:

Somehow I think that 6 would be a bit of a problem to transport though...DH never wanted to take the two dogs camping with us, so they've always gone to stay at Nanny's house. This is now out of the question as we have the three and Nanma who lives with Nanny is too infirm to have my bouncy horrors in the house with her unattended.....also my sister has moved in & is not at all complimentary (but that's another story :x ) so the girls have not been back since  They even spent Christmas Day in the car so we didn't upset my sis - with regular walkies I hasten to add!

We are now considering a house sitter if we do go away (which doesn't happen very often anyway :? )....any volunteers?:lol:
