I haven't knitted anything for years but an Omleteer asked me to make a chook jumper for her ex batt and here it is

I'd be interested in those - my skinny lurcher pup needs them in this cold weather. I usually get them from the local PDSA shop (when they have them in stock), or the K9 site.

That's lovely! How inspiring! We are picking up two ex-batts on Saturday, and I am sorely tempted to knit them some fabulous hen-cosies. I think the hens might end up better dressed that the henkeepers... Did you use the pattern from Laughing Hens?

Oooo Oniondog, I bet you're excited, I'm off the scale according to my 9yr old DD & need to calm down . I'm collecting my 4 ex-batts on Saturday too

 

Their house is ready I just need to attach the tarp for protection in the run and throw the hemcore in. Perhaps I should give my own house a bit of a tidy & cleanup this week as I can't see anything being done next week.....

this morning I started another one for the same chook because my sister insisted that another was needed for when the first one is in the wash and my sister doesn't even have chooks - is it catching do you think?

the chook jumper is nearly finished so it really doesn't take long...

Here is Bramble, the baldest of our two newbies, sporting her hand-knitted jumper. Thank you fowlbird for the inspiration!

I must confess that she wore it for an hour or so -- long enough to get nice and cosy -- then she decided to start pulling at it, so I took it off her! I think I might put it on her for short bursts just to warm her up a bit (and so it seems it was worth knitting it!) They have been rather unlucky to arrive this weekend -- the world must seem like a cruel place!

Hens have amuch higher body temp (104deg as opposed to our 97.4deg) than us, so they're usually pretty good at keeping warm even when they're pretty bare.

I'm sure you're right. They weren't eating anything though, so I worried there wasn't any fuel to keep warm with. Just me fussing, I'm sure. But after a boost of warmth (or perhaps after the shame of knitwear) and finally working out that eating was a good idea, Bramble seems far happier today, and with luck is saved the indignity of the jumper from now on...
