struggling with weight loss

Recommended Posts

I'm sure I'm not on my own - used to be a real skinny rib as a teenager - put weight on having babies - lost it during divorce - put it all back on again AND MORE over the last 10 years and now can't shift it at all!!!!!! I sometimes starve myself which I know is not good. Have been told that as I am now menopausal (don't know how to spell it nevermind get through it ) that it is inevitable I will feel/look like this!! I am soooo depressed about it I sometimes don't know which way to turn........................

Hi there, I'm not menopausal so I suppose I can't really say but I don't think it's inevitable that you will stay big, although I reckon it's probably goingto be a lot harder to shift  I'm 40 and it's much harder to shift weight than it ever was before (goes on easy enough tho! )

Have you tried any slimming clubs? I only ask because I tried one for the first time last year and shifted a stone that I haven't put back on even though I stopped going last summer. I went to Slimming World which worked for me, other people have had great results with weight watchers. It's so easy not just to eat the wrong things, but I've found that my portion sizes have crept up and up until they are the same as for my ex - I sit in an office all day and he's a builder so they should be somewhat different!

Try keeping an honest food diary for a week, I mean REALLY honest, it can be quite an eye opener! I liked Slimming World because you kept a diary to start with which made me MUCH more aware of what I was eating without really thinking about it. Or try going back to the GP and ask to speak to the dietician, - our practice nurse does diet advice I think. If you want to lose weight I can't see a menopausal being a reason not too although as I said I think it will be hard with your body changing all the time.

Good luck, don't give up, if it doesn't shift then instead of having to buy all new clothes because you're thinner, treat yourself to a new wardrobe of really flattering clothes and really make the most of what you've got.

Jill, sorry your feeling low especially about your weight. BB has given good advice, its harder for all of us as we get older to lose weight  .

Portion size seems to me to be the key, depriving yourself of anything can make us feel low and miserable. I am trying to eat about half my old size meals and stop when full (although its hard to break the habit of leaving food on your plate) The advantage is that my food bill has dropped a little, I freeze anything not dished up and when theres enough of one thing put them together for a free easy meal.

I think its important not to beat yourself up about your weight nor do anything drastic, just take each day as it comes. Since I stopped beating myself up I have begun to lose a few pounds and feel better about myself as I dont feel deprived and I dont spend my whole life thinking about and trying to plan special meals.

Hope that helps, you are undoubtedly a great person...you are an omleteer!!!!:dance:

Jil sorry to hear you are feeling so low about your weight. when you are in the midst of it it is difficult to see a way out. I started going to the gym in april last year and at christmas i put weight on and i stopped going to the gym for about a month. which was silly but i couldnt face it. i couldnt face myself.

Food diary is a great idea! remember its not about the big decisions you make (joining an exercise class, throwing out all fatty food in your house) its about the small decisions every day like eating a biscuit or an apple

Poor you, it can be really depressing trying to lose weight :( .

I do the same as Miffy - small portions. I've started putting my main meal on a flat soup plate rather than a dinner plate. Even then I sometimes find I don't want to eat the whole lot. I also try to avoid the "baddies" (crisps, cakes, biscuits) as much as possible.

I managed to lose just over half a stone recently just by doing this but haven't managed to maintain it recently :? .

Small changes are easier to maintain - the weight may take longer to come off but is more likely to stay off.

Good luck - come here for encouragement whenever you like :) .

OK I'm a lot younger, but I lost 1/2 a stone from going to the gym. I'm terrible with diets but I go 2-3 times a week for 1 1/4 hours and maintain 62kg (9 stone 11). I started at 67kg last Summer so it took about 6 months. I tried to stay within the fat burning heart rate which is written on some of the machines.

Thanks to everyone for your support and suggestions. I think I was at a particularly low ebb when I first posted. I think it's because in theory I have got about 5 stone to shed!!!! It seems like an endless task. It's not that I eat loads of junk, I eat good healthy stuff - obviously just too much of it!!! One of the main problems is that both my OH and I love to cook, and then obviously eat it, and as one by one the kids have left (4 in total) we still seem to cook the same amount!! One of our passions is spanish tapas, its very easy to overeat - and drink Rioja - with this style of food. One of the problems is that I am of the generation where you had to finish everything on your plate!!

However, have lost 6 pounds in three weeks by cutting out unnecessary carbs - bread, potatoes, pasta etc. I know it will be a slow process and that it's not easy in the cold weather, but Spring is on the way, will spend more time in the garden and the allotment (by the way the chickens have been given permission to visit the allotment!!!) so hopefully will get more exercise. Have a plan to team up with a friend to go walking round the park as well.

Thanks again everyone, sorry to be a whinger!

Hi Jill,

it all sounds very familiar to me :( Menopause 3 years on, hot flushes good (im still hot it just comes in flushes now  ) kids left to go to uni, and the weight just arrives overnight

I decided I would not worry about it, would not be a slave to the scales but I did go out and get myself a very pretty, feminine smaller plate and have all my meals on that so my portions are a lot smaller ( my boys are all well over 6ft and all have size 11 - 13 feet so eat a lot when home) :D . OH also over 6ft

I also have an allotment and in the spring do loose a lot of weight sorting that out - plus it makes you feel good out in the sun. I also (at my ancient age of 55) joined a search and rescue group (a bit extreme maybe  ) but it is great exercise with the training nights and gives a good feel good factor of helping in the community and I lost a stone in weight.

I am never going to be thin but I feel I am reasonably healthy and around 11 stone is not too huge.

Ah cheer up love! Most of us are the same & always trying to lose a bit here & there. I'm just over my first week following weight watchers - all by myself, no classes. I'll weigh myself later. I'm also going to buy a treadmill & a Wi fit when I can afford after my hols.

It's so hard & I go up & down all through life. But to me as long as don't go up & up & up - then I can handle putting some weight on, then having dieting slurges. Does everyone understand what I mean? :?

Just try & lose a teeny bit then see how you feel. If you feel chuffed, carry on. If you feel deprived then stop & have another bash at it some other time.

I hope I'm not waffling about rubbish? ha ha.

Good luck whatever you decide - but please don't starve yourself!!!

Hi Jill

You are most definitely not alone ! I used to be really skinny up until my 30's when an underactive thyoid kicked in. Now it feels like each time I start a diet my start weight is higher and I should be dieting now but can't get going.

I know when I'm stressed I eat the wrong things and even when I'm not stressed I like cooking, baking and socialising around food. I also do too little exercise.

I know how to lose the weight but struggle to actually do it.

Hi Jill

6lbs is a fantastic start!

Last Feb I joined a Rosemary Conley class - didn't think about it, just did it!

At a size 16, weighing 12st 10.5lbs I decided to see what I could achieve in 12 weeks - no weight goal or dress to "get into"................just 12 weeks.

I lost 4lbs in my first week, 2.5lbs in my second week, 2lbs in my third week and by my seventh week I'd lost my first stone.

The Rosemary Conley plan counts calories, includes talks and an exercise class and provides you with portion pots so you don't have to measure anything. It really is simple and there is a very important fat content rule which is easy to understand and follow.

The best thing about it .....although I shouldn't admit to.....is that I haven't had to give up my (one or two) glasses of wine every night :oops::shock::oops::shock::oops::shock::oops: Well, you can't give EVERYTHING up, can you?

I'm now three stone lighter, am a size 10, feel fabulous and soooooo pleased that I'm not sitting here this year wishing I had done something sooner!

Keep going and do what works for you...........you will succeed :D

6lbs is fab Jill.

1-2lbs a week is about right for the weight to stay off hopefully.

Why not set yourself mini targets to get you through it? Say, for every half stone lost treat yourself to something like a new nail varnish, a DIY facial, a day out and about to a place you've been meaning to go to or a bit of cheapy jewellery, anything that is non-food related but helps you through it and will give you a little lift as you get there. (At W/Watchers it was a silver 7 sticker) You could make each whole stone loss a larger gift to yourself as a bigger incentive like a spa day, manicure, massage etc, trip to the zoo, (A new Chook?!!!). At the end of the day you have to feel positive and good enough about yourself to keep motivated so this should help.

Good luck with it all. If you need help or a shoulder to lean on you know where we all are!

Well done Jill! That's an excellent weight loss. Keep it up! I hope you get the "walking in the park plan" going.

sounds reasonable to me  exercise definately helps lift your mood and lower your weight, toned muscles burn calories even when you are resting

Hi,

Just thought I'd let you all know that I have now lost over 10lbs. :D Still only 2lbs per week but at least going in the right direction. Not been able to do much exercise though at the moment as have a bit of a back problem (sciatica) but will resume when better. Hope to loose a few more pounds before I go away a week on Thursday - was originally aiming for a stone by then, but we'll see. Not thinking about how much more to go as that's too depressing. As they say 'one day at a time' :D

That's what I attribute the last stone and a half to!!! It was when I started teaching from home and providing tea, coffee AND biscuits for the students. Of course when there was no one there, guess who finished them off!!! Never have been able to have just one of anything, so I'm finding the best way is not to have them in the house at all. Except DH decided to buy some cookies at the weekend :shameonu::roll::( - but I was really good and went out of the kitchen when he was eating them!!!!
