Geoid
I was lying in bed watching a film, moved my leg slightly, and had the worst pain in my life (so far), I had a cramp to end all cramps. First just a little cramp in my leg, fine I think, give it a rub and move it a bit and it will go away. Wrong! As soon as I moved my leg a second, much more painful cramp comes, so bad I was screaming (loudly) . It felt like someone had sliced my leg open with a hot, blunt knife. This lasted for about 10 minutes. Now, I can't walk properly, I have a limp. It still hurts. Groan. *begs for sympathy*
Snowy
Oooh, Fred, cramp is horrid isn't it? (sorry, thats all I've got)
Geoid
The last time I had cramp I was swimming, in the deep end, lifeguard had to rescue me! I thought that was bad, but this is just pure pain.
Nicola O
Oh, Fred, I can really sympathise with you coz I've had that cramp - always in the calf muscle, and always whilst lying in bed (perhaps it has something to do with the position / laying down ) and it is always AGONY. Hope the leg feels better soon and that you don't get another cramp. Nicola
Egluntyne
Stretching exercises before going to bed are supposed to help.
BeckyBoo
Poor you, have a "virtual rub" to make it better! BeckyBoo
Chickvic
Ouch! I have to get out of bed to walk the cramp off and then it still hurts the day after so Fred... *lots of sympathy*
Couperwife
oh Fred, I sympathise I used to get cramp, I havent had it for a long time (ok, about a year ), but I used to get it at night, I ended up having to buy a bed with a foot board so I could push my foot onto something at 3am if you had major cramp, you have probably damaged the muscle, it will take a few days, but will settle down. so, you need to eat quinine in some form or other. either bananas, or tonic water spring to mind. if it gets too stupid or regular, you can get quinine tablets (my mum takes them - hmmm, maybe, its my family and cramp ) but I would talk to a doc or someone before you get to this stage - try holland and barrett? hope this helps cathy x
Ain't Nobody Here
My OH occasionally gets that . It's looks like agony . Have a hug till it feels better .
Seagazer
Wierdly enough my OH got cramp during the night and thinks he's damaged his calf muscle. I haven't had it for a while but the last time I did it took a few days for my calf to feel normal again. I'm going to suggest he tries tonic water. I hope it gets better soon Fred. jackiepoppies
Am I right in thinking that cramp can be caused by a salt deficiency? Jackiex PS Hope you fell better soon!

iar fach goch
I always had horrendous cramp whilst pregnant, and like you my leg would remain painful for days. I found it useful to cool my leg down and would often be found in the early hours of the morning lying with my legs up on the cold wall! Ardene5
Hi Fred Been there had the T shirt but also had to give up wearing normal length Wellington's as they cause a suction on my muscle so as I remove them it pulls the muscle down and I scream with pain .... now wear 3/4 length Wellington's. Best regards Ian
chickenanne
I've heard a salt imbalance can cause cramp: so either drink more (WATER, Fred, not beer ). My OH had cramp for the first time ever a couple weeks ago, he claimed he needed to go to the dr/casualty . Silly man.
stoice
Ouch. I've had this. Felt like a pulled muscle for days afterwards *hug* I'd heard it's down to a deficiency in something, potassium and calcium I think. (And also maybe a lack of vitamin D which helps us process calcium) So I'd eat some bananas for the potassium and eat a nice bowl of fortified cereal for vitamin D and Calcium - oh and maybe lack of daylight hours this time of year could have an effect. Vitamin D is produced when our skin is exposed to sunlight. Hope you feel better soon.
KimmyCustard
I hate the night cramp thing, am I the only one that doesnt know whether to laugh or cry when you're woken with the agonising squeeze in your calf and you dont know what to do with yourself to stop it??!! OH is full of sympathy and I usually get: 'Oh suck it up, you big girls blouse.' Until it happens to him, then its a helicopter lift to the nearest A and E. Valkyrie
Poor Fred. I always used to get cramp in my middle toes whenever I went swimming (not good when you are in the middle of a race for the club). It is because all my toes are double jointed (good party trick for upsetting the squeamish) and the kicking action always set it off. The first time DS had it, he had just walked home after getting off the bus, then screamed as he ran downstairs saying that he had broken his leg! I did point out that he hadn't done anything to break it and he had just run down the stairs relatively OK. Made him sit on the floor and showed him how to ease it. Luckily I haven't had it in the calf muscles for ages - and it always seems to happen at night when it does. I don't have salt, but I do eat banana's, so maybe that's the best option. Thats just like me Koojie - swimming always sets my toes off - I'm double jointed too. I can do a wiggling thing with my thumb that always makes people go yuk I always look really silly getting out of swimming, walking very strangely because of the cramp in my toes. Valkyrie
I always look really silly getting out of swimming, walking very strangely because of the cramp in my toes Aha, the trick is to get to the end of the lane and don't get out - massage poor toesies while they are under water. Of course getting out was a complete different matter and a huge embarrassment anyway! Can't do the thumb bit but my brother can turn his thumb into a trigger - which was very handy because when DS came along, he could do the same with both thumbs! Then we used to have wars with DIY sound effects over the back of the settee at my mums!
