Angels4
I've decided to raise my next batch of girls from chicks (still not ready to try hatching). I have placed an order for the following. To arrive 2nd week of April. 10 Black Rosecomb 8 White Blacktailed Japanese 2 Buff Orpingtons aka. Coco and Chanel 2 Sliver Laced Wyandottes aka. Thelma and Lousie 2 Aracauna aka. Lucy and Ethel The reason I'm ordering so many BR and WBJ is because as bantams they cannot be sexed and I have a 50/50 chance some of them may be roosters (which I cannot keep, but don't worry I've already got a friend to take any and all of the boys) I plan on keeping: 4 BR aka Dorothy, Sophia, Blanche, and Rose 2 WBJ aka Betty and Wilma Edited February 2, 2009 by Guest

Angels4
Ha Ha bet you keep more than that. Shall enjoy following their progress. I was just thinking that same thought...Wouldn't be much of a challange getting another eglu And for those who asked for pictures...No fears there, I will be purchasing my new digital camera prior to arrival day. Lewis
Just being nosey What are they going in as a brooder? And what will the weather be like over there?
Angels4
Just being nosey What are they going in as a brooder? And what will the weather be like over there? The weather, well this is New England and the weather can be unpredictable, but we will have warm days and cooler nights. Luckily our garage has a very nice storage section with electricity for heat to be set up as a brooder, I was originally going to use this section of the garage as my coop, but changed my mind when I saw the Eglu. I'm thinking of a childs wading pool to keep the kids "confined" while small of course lining with newspaper to combat the slippery surface for those developing leg muscles. When they outgrow the wading pool I can shut them in the storage space until they are big enough or the weather warms enough for them to be outside. As this is my first experience with chicks, do you have any advice?
ClaireG
My sister lives in Vermont and has 9 chooks that she has raised from chicks. She's just found out that one is a rooster but is keeping him. I'm fairly sure she kept them in a box in her shed with a heatlamp. I'll check for you Mark. Mollystar
Hi I raised chicks after asking for POL & getting lumbered one Sunday afternoon with 12 chicks, as it was summer the older ones at about 4-5 weeks ish went into the cube at night with the door shut & placed into the run with a box provided with a mix of growers & chick crumb, & small dish with water to drink. The younger ones, anthing from a week ish old I placed in a large plastic storage tub in the hall with a heat lamp 24/7, this I raised as they grew, news paper, chick crumb & a small amount of water. It was hard work & I don't miss the smell in the house but I survived. A hard introduction to chicken keeping though. I'm sure you will be fine
ClaireG
Have just had an email from my sister. She says your ideas sound fine Mark but stresses the need for a heatlamp and also suggested a heated water bowl ( a dog one) for winter. I have no idea what this is but am sure you might

I have no idea what this is but am sure you might Thanks for asking your sister for me Claire. I do have a heat lamp planned. I've seen the heated water bowl for dogs, but opted to buy a heated base that I can put a more traditional waterer on as I was afraid the chicks might fall into a dog bowl and drown. I have the same type of setup for my bigger girls and it only takes a small amount of energy, because it will only heat up when the temp falls below freezing. Not much longer to go, until my cube arrives............
