Lesley
I'm one of those people who is always zapped by car doors and 'bitten' by metal hand rails and door handles in shops - and it's always worse in cold, dry, weather...... I've been really bad the last couple of days! - Jazz won't come near me as every time I go to pat her head I zap her and sparks fly As I'm 'of a certain age' I wear mostly cotton clothes so there's not much else I can think of to do............ Anyone else having the same problem?
Tina C
I am the same, Lesley. So is Layla. Yesterday I gave Layla a kiss on the nose and we were both jumped back, surprised by the force of the static. I close car doors with my bottom or elbow - although some cars seem worse than others! I am sure its because I wear a fleece hat, tops etc. But why doesn't eveyone suffer this problem?
Guest
yep, car doors are a nightmare, I try and shut them with an elbow when my dad was in hospital, it was much worse, I must have been conducting electricity from all the hospital equipment or something! Egluntyne
I'm the same Lesley, car doors, lifts, escalators and when my children were small, pushchairs and prams. It can be quite painful at times.
chickencam
My hair at this time of year is full of static it drives me mad My OH can't touch his secretary, they have to hand each other things very carefully, not sure what to make of that one We used to have a VW Scirrocco and the only way to touch it was with arms or behinds
Guest
I think Crocs make it worse . . . but I won't stop wearing mine. I even started getting shocks off the metal shaft of the vacuum cleaner
Mutrix Farmers
All the time! It's worse when I get out of OH's car, my own doesn't seem to do it. And it happens all year round
Tessa the Duchess
I read somewhere that if you hang a small piece of chain from the underside of your car so that it touches the road it acts as an earth and you don't get shocks anymore. You could presumably do the same with a pushchair/pram, not sure about lifts and hoovers tho Tessa
Guest
and if you put your hand on the metal before putting your foot on the floor, it should stop it happening.
..lay a little egg for me
I read somewhere that if you hang a small piece of chain from the underside of your car so that it touches the road it acts as an earth and you don't get shocks anymore. You could presumably do the same with a pushchair/pram, not sure about lifts and hoovers tho Tessa Perhaps you could hang it from your trouser leg to stop the static in shops etc. I think its the nylon carpets in shops that cause the problem. Tiggy
maybe you're hot stuff you could try one of those fabric conditioner sheets in the tumble drier - if you use one -
Cinnamon
I too have an electric touch Lesley - I get static shocks all the time. I still squeal whenever I get one, even if I am in the supermarket
Sheilaz
Yes, I have it too Lesley, ouch! Also, I make clocks & watches do weird things. My current watch is fine, but I couldn't wear the one before. It kept perfect time if not worn, but if I put it on it would go madly wrong, then fine again when off. Ooops! ruth1
I get shocks all the time to, I go through watches at a rate of knots as they all stop working properly, I've tried putting a plaster on the back which helps a little .
Cooks
I zap myself all the time unfortunately
Lesley
I'm so glad it's not just me It's the way everyone looks at you when you squeal and jump in the middle of a shop I haven't worn a watch for years now. I wonder if a conditioner sheet would help with the tablecloth I put in the drier. It was so full of static when I took it out that it had 'collected' all manner of other items from the wash - Carl came to see what all the commotion was as I was trying to peel things apart I had to fling it on the floor in the end and couldn't get anywhere near it again. ClaireG
It's mainly shops that i get zapped in. The new Asda Living in Stratford always gets me Lesley
fluffyknickers
I am terrible too and i squel loudly when I get a bad one. In work this week my scanner gave me a really strong one and I screamed and then got a message from the guy ho works downstairs saying "what was that"!!! I heard that it can be worse at different times of the month to do with your hormones changing. Dont know if some old wife said that or if it could be true. The worst thing is my new snuggly fleecey dressing gown - I earth myself before putting it on and off! x
Angels4
I think Crocs make it worse . . . but I won't stop wearing mine. I even started getting shocks off the metal shaft of the vacuum cleaner I would stop running the vacum before I would stop wearing my crocs. bluekarin
I too get static shocks from things. Cars, shelves in shops - Woolworths was the worst for this, pressing the lift buttons (have to put my coat or jumper sleeve over my finger, or get the kids to do it if they are with me) or even from people. I used to get it really bad off a car my parents owned and then we owned. Luckily now, we have a fibreglass Renault Espace so no shocks. But I do squeal when I get shocked, and sometimes it feels worse when I know it's going to happen.
