Snowy
Been to visit Dad today and he kindly took us to Baytree garden centre near Holbeach. He took the boys into the Fun Farm while I had an hour to myself browsing the garden centre bit. What did I find? Chicken runs and houses! So, there I was examining them and tutting to myself about the poor design when a couple asked me if I kept chickens and what did I think of this run. Well you know how those conversations go, and by the time I'd finished they were dashing home to look up Omlet and order a cube I decided I'd better finish browsing at that point before the management threw me out! On my way out I noticed they also had chickens - they looked very well kept and healthy but - get this - they were selling Black Rocks for £39.99!!! kayandrob
hehe, that made me giggle, shocked at the price of the black rock's though!!!!
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
Their prices are an outrage! I am amazed at garden centres full stop though. When you think that seeds have blown about the planet for years, and that you can grow stuff from seeds or cuttings - it astounds me people pay mega money for plants and things in these chi chi plastic environments. Slow and grow go together. And they're satisfying that way. £40 for a black rock. Hee hee!
Couperwife
I think you should be given a star by Omlet for a fab sales technique well done (I wonder if they are on the forum yet ) cathy x
Jules.
You need a good egg reward for that!
Egluntyne
*splutter* £39.99! I can't get my breath.
Ygerna
I try not to use Garden centres, though I really enjoy browsing in them. As a general rule, the sleeker, cleaner and 'posher' they are their prices have to increase to pay for it.
Ain't Nobody Here
@ Ygerna . Well done you . I hope you told them about the forum too .

Cooks
I know these places have to make a profit, but thats extortionate for a black rock!
BeckyBoo
It's scary that you can go into one of these places, buy an extortionately priced jar of "homemade" jam, a "designer hand-blown vase at designer prices", all your bedding plants, have a cup of coffee, oh, and pick up a chicken or two with badly designed run from the next aisle as an overpriced garden ornament. I don't suppose they were doing any checks to see if the people paying through the nose had any clue at all about poultry keeping? I would have thought that anyone who had put any thought in would have realised how HUGELY overpriced their chickens were and would have avoided them like the plague. I'm very glad that chicken keeping is becoming so popular, this is, sadly, the price some hens will pay, being looked after by Saturday staff who haven't got a clue and being bought by people on a whim as the latest "must have" Sorry - bit doom and gloom today! they might be perfectly fine
Redwing
Perhaps we should start walking around with Omlet sandwich boards saying 'ask me about Omlet!' We are very lucky with the nearby garden centre which sells chickens, the staff are knowledgable and someone is always lurking by the chickens to tell you what great pets they make without any hard sell, the chicken houses they sell are well built too (the fact that they have an Eglu and cube on display doesnt hurt either ) £40 for a Black Rock is very funny - I expect they would tell you they are rare or something
Purplemaniacs
By the time I'd finished they were dashing home to look up Omlet and order a cube Well you are a good sales lady We came to your hen party and then bought an eglu and two girls, then another two, then a cube and soon (hopefully ) a walk in run. Mrs Webmuppet
I did my bit for Omlet today. The checkout lady in the supermarket was making polite conversation whilst scanning my shopping and asked if I was making a cake with the big bag of sultanas........I said no they're for the chickens .........and so the conversation drifted neatly along to a spot of Omlet name dropping, she had always wanted chickens but didn't think you could keep them in a back garden. She scribbled the website address down .
