Redwing
They look great, which breed are they? They are called Country Gold chickens and they are from the brill Cotswold Chickens http://www.cotswoldchickens.com/table.htm They are slow growing ones My husband says I am in BIG trouble if I get to the course in April and find out I don't have the stomach for this as we will have purchased our second batch by then! moochoo
That's great, we want to buy our meat birds from there. It'll be interesting to see how you get on with them.
carrie
This is an idea I am also thinking about. Before we had our chickens (last September) I did buy free range eggs but wasn't too bothered about where my meat came from. But since having the chickens and watching Hugh's chicken run it is now a real consideration. We have now given up non free range chicken meat for Lent,( to give me time to pursuade husband) I have talked about the idea of our own chicks for meat, initially it was a deffinate NO from the children, but today I have shown them some photo's on the main chicken forum of someone's rescued ex bats (bald and very sad looking) and they were horrified and can now see where I am coming from. Please do let us all know how you get on, I agree don't name them or pick them up much. Good luck

WitchHazel
Ooh, Redwing, how lovely! Hope you don't get too attached. Our table bitds are being hatched for us; we'll be getting them at 6 weeks old, so we think we have seven or eight weeks to get everything sorted. DH and his friend have been clearing the allotment (it was in a terrible state), and we'll be ready just about it in time. I wanted to go to Cotswold chickens and get the breed you did, but DH and his friend have arranged to get some dual purpose french breed They know someone locally who hatches chicks for the table and thats what he buys, so he is getting the eggs in. He's going to be raising his on the same allotment site as us, but on another plot. We'll see how these turn out and then decide what to do for the next batch. Assuming there is a second batch. TAJ
I hope it goes well - our first 4 came from there - however it turned out only one was a County Gold, the other 3 were an even slower growing type! Good luck, Tracy

The Dogmother
Ahh, so you've been visiting Jude then! Did you get to cuddle the puppies? I was cuddling those chicks the other day - they won't be so cute in a few weeks time Tasha and you'll not be worried about despatching them.
