Mrs Frugal
Elder leaves are supposed to keep flies at bay so you could try hanging some by your door - don't forget to ask Mother Elder's permission first though ! Mint, eucalyptus oil, citronella etc are also deterrents so you could try putting some essential oils in fragrance burners or in little dishes or bring some mint leaves in the house and put in a jar of water. Christian
thanks kate. running outside to grab elder leaves as we speak (or type). That tree is handy, had the flowers, berries and now leaves, will try mint too! Christian x x x edited to add Just asked her and she willingly obiliged. The mint has worked in the eglu but not in the house, will try again in a cup of water. C x x x
Mrs Frugal
Good luck, Christian! Not nice being bothered by flies. We're just swamped with daddy long legs at the moment - ugh!! Funny watching the chickens chasing them though !

Cinnamon
One word......RAID Not too much use to us at the moment - we are infested with great big house spiders here *shudder*
One Man Banned
We keep getting "attacked" at work by daddy long legs - me an arachnophobe! I cant stand bugs or things and they are flying around hitting our faces as we're serving people! EURGHHH!
Christian
One word......RAID I have tried and tried with Raid, but they are immune! Some kind of mutant strain of fly i think. They dont even 'fly' off when i spray them, just sit there and take it, laughing at me . Put up lots of bundles of elder leaves as suggested by Kate, but they are sitting on that now Roll on winter. Linda
One word......RAID Not too much use to us at the moment - we are infested with great big house spiders here *shudder* Eeeww! Aren't they horrible. We had better not carry on with this theme though. I remember last time we discussed it, our lack of fondness for huge arachnids caused much offence to certain members!!! Apparently, the spiders are particularly prolific this year due to the type of weather we have had during the summer. They said so on Newsround so it must be true! Cinnamon
I have just bought an elctric spider catcher on eBay. It sort of sucks them up a long tube, then, when you are outside, you reverse it & it shoots them back out again
Linda
Ooh, that sounds good, Sarah. I know a few of us confessed to hoovering them up to get rid of them, so this might be a perfect solution. At least the spider should end up unscathed. I couldn't say the same for me, though, after such an encounter. I get goose bumps just thinking about it!
Cate in NZ
I have just bought an elctric spider catcher on eBay.It sort of sucks them up a long tube, then, when you are outside, you reverse it & it shoots them back out again That sounds like a great gadget Sarah And I suppose you could shoot them out in any direction you fancied. Into next door's garden for instance Actually I get on great with my neighbours, so I really wouldn't do that, but then there's always the old dear at the bottom of my garden who dislikes the way my tree drops leaves on her garden as well.... but refused permission when we wanted to get it pruned a few years ago (it's subject to a tpo). Maybe she'd like a few spiders along with this years leaf harvest

Mrs Frugal
That's exactly what I think, Sarah, so I let LSH empty it for me ! I've also been known to stick a lump of tissue paper in the end of the hose when I've finished hoovering so they can't get out ! I HATE spiders !
