Hello all

Well we've been digging the garden all weekend to prepare for my WIR, which we were going to build ourselves. But I'm getting jealous of all the talk of Aviaries4U so I've tracked down a company in Ireland which makes mention of aviaries but this will be his first hen run, so I'm going to petrify him with plans and pictures in an email tomorrow.

My question is. Flat Roofed Runs... you all seem to have them, the water runs off alright? I mean of course with the undulating corrugated plastic.

Fingers crossed his quote is a good one and OH can't say No!

as long as he builds it so the roof has a slight fall on it, yes the water will fall off, you might then like to add guttering and a waterbutt :)

I do not have clear plastic on mine, I have the metal currugated roofing sheets and I love them!

we have a flat corrugated plastic roof which looks fab but the water pools in the dips and seeps thru the joins. DH is going to re-build the roof with a slant when the weather improves.

I'd highly recommend you have either an apex roof or a slanted roof! :D

We built our flat roof with a slope but the plastic sagged with time and now each sheet has a pool in it's centre. One of them leaks into the run and has dripped enough to make a considerable hole in the floor of the run. We'll be strengthening the wood battens that the roof is attached too sometime in the Summer.

Thanks everyone. I'll tell the chappie that the roof only needs to slope a few inches but that it does need to slope.

OH did say something about a water butt and guttering so I imagine we will do that, if not immediately then definitely once my veggie plot gets underway. At the moment it's just a huge heap of soil taken from the site of the WIR.

My run is 15ft x 6ft. The roof slopes from the front to the back. I've installed a gutter at the back which runs along the length and feeds a water butt. There's 50mm (2") slope from front to back over the 6ft depth. This works really well. Between the front and back are supports for the roof sheets to stop them sagging in the middle. The front support is 50mm, then there's one of 28mm and one of 15mm. I might add a 38mm baton towards the front, I'll see how that goes.

There's loads more pictures available from the link in my signature.

I am interested in the roof slopes?

I am def going to slope mine slightly for run off.

What is the better material I have onduline panels but am thinking of putting a clearer corrungated perhaps in somewhere but what material is strong clear PVC?? or is there another material?? Any recommendations for where to buy clearer panels or type appreciated too(perhaps I should post this as another topic but as we are on the roof subject)?

I know with Onduline there are special nails(look line big pins) but they have a cap on the end to seal once nailed in.

ASTW - looks great :D What did you use to attach the roof sheets to the battons?
Thank you! I'd read a post by someone else who said they lost a roof off a WIR in gale force winds, so mine is held down with a lot of screws! I screwed the batons to the frame and then screwed the corrugated sheets to the batons, with a screw every 4 'dips'. I didn't pre-drill the roof sheets where the screws went because I didn't want any leaks. Instead, to try an ensure a good seal, I used sharpe ended screws which self-tapped into the corrugated sheets as I screwed them in. This seems to have worked, we had quite a lot of rain the weekend before last and no drips in the run so far .

I used the corrugated sheets supplied by Aviaries4U on my roof. It's very similar to the Mini Profile PVC Corrugated Sheet you can buy at Wickes (see here).

Mine is held down with sharp-ended, self-tapping, screws at a spacing of one screw every four dips in the corrugated sheet.

Thanks for the link Andrew ..just had a look and probably if i get a couple of Wickes panels that should suffice for a window in the onduline!

Yes I was worrying about it taking off in strong winds

cheers
