Teenagers and candles - beware

Recommended Posts

Whatever you do, do not allow your 17 year old daughter to put candles on your birthday cake. You've seen the card with the joke about the fire brigade? Well not quite that bad but . . .

Mum made me a special choccy cake, nice choccy icing on it. It looked lovely. Later that afternoon I heard a "Come quick!!!" So I went into the kitchen to see 51 candles creating so much heat that they were melting each other. Not only that, the wax was dripping all over the icing which was also melting. Some candles were trick ones and kept relighting and I started to hyperventilate trying to blow them out. OH decided to help and basically spat all over the cake - as he said that was how it was done (I beg to differ). :vom: Finally he licked his fingers to put the last few out. End result was a chocolate cake with ash, spit, melted candles and melted candle holders (yep the heat was that fierce) on a drippy icing. I would advise once you hit the double figures, only have one candle for the tens and whatever for the units - or one or two big ones - not like DD did!!!

Once the offending stuff had been s"Ooops, word censored!"ed off, there was some left that was edible. Funnily enough "Ooops, word censored!"ody else likes that cake - just me. So now I am gradually finishing it off. The rest of the day went fine - lots of chicken bits and a trip to London for sushi  - even mum tried some. It wasn't all bad, and the weather was nice too.

And spitty spray does not work either.

 Thanks peeps! It wasn't a particularly large cake - I didn't think it was possible to squeeze that many candles on there! Some were those American style with a thin wax covering - they were the first to go! Most of the holders cannot be salavaged so better chuck the lot and start again. So much for reducing my carbon footprint!

Aha Minnie - you spotted me! Yep, the chicken book - lovely pics, now if only the one without the chicken pics was merged together you would have a cracking book (I like hard facts!), and the Omlet page is probably the best for looking at breeds (haven't any of those books - yet). But when you want to persuade your OH who may be in two minds about having chickens - the pretty one is the clincher! I'm still looking for the perfect book.

Finally last night number one son calls just before midnight. "Can you do me a favour mum?" "Like what exactly?" "I missed my last train so can you pick me up at Guildford station?" Minor appoplexy and lots of spluttering "GUILDFORD? That's miles away!" He then cracks up laughing and said he was kidding. I couldn't believe it - the grumpy one in the family! "Who are you and what have you done with my son?" He was well chuffed with himself - turns out he was stopping at a friend's in Kempshot and was letting me know I could bolt up the front door. Oh well, at least I knew he was safe!

What to do with birthday cash pressies - buy new plants for the garden to fill those gaps where 3 little monkeys have either scoffed the original plant or scratched it to oblivion!

Sadly no - it was a bit of a panic at the time - and then it all got s"Ooops, word censored!"ed off as it cooled! Although the candle debacle is still in a pile of contorted wax and plastic - haven't got around to binning them yet - although the cake has now disappeared (oink! )

Emma - just noticed - I hadn't seen your post - jumped a few I think. sorry and thankies. I blame the fallout.

Wow 60 for your grandad - I hope there was more than one person to light all those candles! :D

Minnie - did get some wax in my first mouthful - yuk yuk yuk. Pleh! :P

I did take photos of the aftermath but I shall have to wait for OH to put them on here - I have loads of chicken and garden ones too - he'll be running out of space soon on the chip.
