My hubby .... he of the septic tank fame .... my brave hero .... has chickened out ( sorry no pun intended :oops::oops: ) of his op today to have his long standing broken hooter fixed.

It looks OK but he can't breath through one nostril properly.

Just mentioned to him to think about getting ready and he casually told me that he cancelled it yesterday.

I don't know :wall::wall:

Oh no! If he'd had it done I would have been very interested in how he felt about the operation. My YS will have to have this done in the future. The surgeon originally said he'd have to wait til he's stopped growing but the surgeon has now changed his mind and said he can have it done. We've left it up to YS, he also can't breathe out of one nostril and at this time of year with hayfever, his life is miserable. He's already had one op to take away some of the tissue inside his nostrils. I'm just worried about him having this other op done. :?

DA, I had a septoplasty operation in January. I have very narrow passageways which makes it difficult to breathe if they swell up. I have lived all my life with this problem and became quite neurotic about my nose. The operation was to straighten the slightly deviated septum and also remove some bone to give a bit more space. I realise this isn't completely the same thing, but it could be a fairly similar operation.

I was really worried about not being able to breathe afterwards, it being something I panic about on a daily basis! I knew I could get through the hospital bit, but I was dreading the days afterwards and all the mouth breathing. I can honestly, honestly say that it was all right. I was very lucky that I didn't have gauze packing, but plastic balloon things which are inflated with air to stop the internal bleeding. They were taken out the morning after the operation and I went home. Straight away I could breathe a little and the mouth breathing really wasn't as awful as I had expected. Neither was it really painful, just an aching feeling sometimes. It took me the full 2 weeks to recover and I had to stay out of society to avoid infection, but I was able to be busy at home in the second week.

I am so, so thrilled with the result. For the first time since I was 16 (that's 30 years!), I don't carry a decongestant spray everywhere I go. I can go to sleep at night without my nose blocking up and be in warm rooms and drink alcohol. The operation was really worth it. :D:D:D

I hope you can persuade your husband that the op is not actually as bad as he thinks and the benefits are absolutely wonderful.

Ginette your post is inspiring. I will copy and paste it for hubby.

A septoplasty is just what was scheduled.

I have discovered that his brother who installs windows and therefore knows all about things medical  filled him so full of horror stories that his courage deserted him despite all my entreaties to the contrary.

Will work on him especially as it seems to have made so much difference to you.

Thanks for the help.

Everybody here has been wonderful I feel ashamed :oops: to have made so light of his fear really.

Before I went in for my operation - and this shows how much I was worrying about it - I found, would you believe it? a septoplasty forum!

http://www.quinlanfaris.com/nose/

I actually found it very helpful to read people's stories because I prefer to be prepared for the worst rather than having a terrible shock. At the time, no-one else seemed to have had the balloons that I had and because of them I think I had a better experience than any of them. :D

The first night was long, but OK because I'd had a GA so I was happy to sit and stare. Because of mouth-breathing, I needed to drink frequently. So I only dozed for about 10 minutes at a time before needing another drink. I also had to visit the bathroom every hour because of the quantity of water I drank. I drank at least 5 litres of water in 12 hours! Once the balloons were out, I was fine and slept in my own bed from the first night home. On the second or third night at home I was lying flat again. :D

DA and Seagazer, I am happy to talk more if you have any questions. Just PM me. It has made such a difference to me that I am a complete fan of the septoplasty. If I needed another one, I wouldn't be worried. I'm not saying it's nothing because it is quite an ordeal to get through for the first 24 hours but it really is very bearable and not anywhere near as unpleasant as I thought it would be.

Thanks Ginette, I've bookmarked those pages. YS only 11 so I'm not sure what to do, it does really annoy him and he is getting a bit self-conscious of the fact that his nose is crooked (honestly though you would have to look really hard). I think it will be sooner rather than later. I shall look through and see if any other youngsters have had it done. :D

hi

I have nose polyps and I had an operation in November 2007.

I was scared because I am a big feartie ( Coward ) when it comes to pain.

Got good results and my nosie is good at moment ( ops not a cure for me and I will need another one )

he should go for it and get it done :)

The poor little love. Why do men always bottle it up? . If he had told you how worried he was you may have been able to help him sort out some of his fears so he didn't have to cancel :wall: . The poor little sausage.

I hope he starts listening to you, and reads Ginettes post on hear, and stops listening to his brother  .
