Angels4
Sometimes on here people will talk about "I lost 30 stone." Sorry for ignorance but what would that be in pounds....... While we are of the subject, just how long is a "fortnight"?
milli
Gosh well done to whoever did that 30 stone is 2-3 peoples worth of weight! There are 14 pounds in a stone. edited to add: a fortnight is fourteen nights, or 2 weeks - or were you joking about that one?

Old Speckled Hen
We use that term a lot here but probably pounds would be better. I had my yearly check up at the doctors' and was measured in Kilograms and Metres. The first too much and the second too little ...shrinking I have lost count of the number of times I've been asked to repeat myself or explain when I've asked for "a couple" of items. Does "Ooops, word censored!"ody use that term anymore? Am I getting old? Stupid question really, of course I am

Aga n Chickens
Does anyone else say 5 & 20 to, or past the hour instead of saying 25 ? I can remember when we were starting to tell the time in school we were told that 5 & 20 was the correct way, but whenever I was asked to tell the time at home I was always asked to correct myself and say that it was either 25 minutes to or past the hour It reminds me of the how many beans make 5 ? Something like....One bean, two beans, a bean and a half, and half a bean Christine
bronze
16 ounces (oz) = 1 pound (lb) 14 lb = 1 stone I have to do some swift division in my head when an american tells me their weight.

Guest
I was shopping for onions earlier in Sainsburys and the loose onions had a label saying how much they were per lb but the bagged onions had a label saying how much they were per kg! That annoys me because you can't work it out properly without a calculator. It would be okay if 500g equalled 1 lb!
chickweed
Does anyone else say 5 & 20 to, or past the hour instead of saying 25 ? Christine I say 5 and 20 but I think it is quite unusual to hear it these days. I am a bit of a dinosaur though.

fluffyknickers
I have no idea what this bean and bean thing is! A couple is two A few is three Liquid is a 'drop' and not a 'bit' when reffering to a small amount Ask someone who uses cms how tall they are and they often use 'feet' as a measurement! Due to a condition she has my daughter is weighed regularly in hospital and they tell me in kgs and then have to convert to lbs for me! Nowt as funny as folk! BarbaraJ
I've never heard the bean thing either I think in cms but weight and height are imperial i'm constantly working ou what kgs measurements in supermarkets = in lbs lol and i still cook in lbs and ozs a couple is definatly 2 but a few could mean anything thats less than alot lol
Milly
I still remember being embarrassed in primary school when I said a couple was more than two - because when people said they would be a couple of minutes it was always a lot more than two Milly

Kalu
Never heard of the bean thing either! I don't use 5 and 20 but I do love to hear it, always reminds me of my grandparents. Donkeys years......must be about the amount of time since I was at school and yonks is the amount of time since you last caught up with a good old friend! a few is less than a handful but more than a couple...... jlo
I think in cms but weight and height are imperial i'm constantly working ou what kgs measurements in supermarkets = in lbs lol and i still cook in lbs and ozs I am quite similar to this. I was taught metric and find it really easy but can't envisage lengths, weights or heights in anything other than imperial. I think I'm getting better .... I find the American way of saying "pounds" to be more aesthetically pleasing than saying, "stones and pounds," but still can't picture the weight. On the machines at the gym you have to enter your weight in pounds and I have no idea if I making myself too heavy or too light and I can't be bothered to work it out! (nor do I really want to get on some scales as I am currently deluding myself that I am a decent weight!)
