4m x 3m Omlet pen, cube, new auto door still boxed and coop light

Can anyone help me? I got back from work an hour ago, found Samosa still in the nesting box. But this time, not moving, eyes shut, no reaction to being lifted or being offered grapes.

 

I took her to the vets. Her temperature is down, eyes red and stuff leaked out of her vent. She's clearly very very unwell and I am in an absolute state. Is there anything I can do? I took a pipette thing from the vets to get water inside her, I've now put her inside on her own, in a dark and quiet room.

 

The vet gave her a couple of injections but said it doesn't look good.

 

Please help.......

Oh dear Fiona, I do feel very sorry for you and poor old Samosa.

It sounds like you have done all you can.

I suggest you just keep her in a warm, comfortable dark place, with access to a few treats and water and let nature take its course. If the vet has given her injections, she may rally, but if she doesn't, then at least you have done the kindest thing by making her comfortable in her last few hours.

It is always so sad when you can't help them, it makes you feel so hopeless, but I am sure she has had a wonderful life with you.

Do keep us posted on what happens.

Thanks, Annie. I'm so upset - I just want to do something practical to help and I don't know what. I can't believe the state I'm in - crying at the vets. I just couldn't stop myself. It's something about innocent creatures suffering - and she was the one pecked on by the others since my dog got hold of her. I am so angry with myself for being careless.

 

Thanks for your support. I just feel not many other people out there understand why the life of a chicken counts.

If you think it might help perk her up 'psychologically' then you could put a biggish mirror next to her; she'll think she's with a flock member. (i did it with my poorly girls and it made me feel better anyway!).

Oh Fiona, how horrible for you and your girl.

 

I think Annie P has given you great advice, there's very little more you can do except make her comfortable as possible. Maybe put a wrapped hot water bottle under her if her temperature is down.

 

It's soooo hard, these little creatures really do get into our hearts! I've cried bucketloads over my two girls lately, and was so upset at the vets having to have them put to sleep I just couldn't speak. All very hard, but they do give us so much pleasure and fun don't they?

Just tried to feed her water, but she's so weak. Her flesh is all a deep red purple. Poor Samosa. I'm sorry I don't know how to make you better .....

I'm really sorry. It sounds as if she is very ill indeed.

 

It might be time for you to consider the fact that she won't get better.

 

If there is no improvement in the morning, or if she deteriorates further, it might be kinder to take her back to the vet so that she can be put to sleep.

Yes, Egluntine, that's sort of where I am now. She doesn't seem to be in pain, she just seems to be shutting down slowly. I'm just so sorry she's only had 3 weeks of being free-range. I wanted to give her so much more.

So sorry to read this sad tale, but you are doing everything you can for your little girl and, although she has only had a short taste of freedom, I'm sure it has been wonderful for her. Keeping my fingers crossed for Samosa - hope she pulls through.

Thanks for all your support. But my husband just checked in on Samosa and she's dead.

 

We're going to bury her now under the quince tree.
