Molly's in season, help! :0/ **added a video***

Recommended Posts

oh aunty e, poor little puss :(

the dogs home said to wait 2 weeks after her season, is that right do you think?

she's still dripping here and there but thankfully everything is washable and I've got a throw on the sofa which I can hand wash

all the animals I've had from a child were done when they were ickle so I never even knew dogs did/had this! It's an education this adoption lark :D

IMHO 2 weeks is far too soon.

The recommended time is midway between seasons. As it's her first season with you then you probably don't know her cycles so 3 months after this season is fine.

Seek advice from your vet who will hopefully give you the correct advice.

Two weeks is much too soon. You have to wait a good few months. Its not only because of the increased blood flow to the uterus (sp?) but also because the hormones change the dog's personality for a while and so that has to go back to normal as well.

Cookie went from her first season straight into a phantom pregnancy and they were very insistent on waiting because of the hormones.

Can I hijack your thread here Poet?

Do female dogs still have hotmonal times even when they've been spayed? Jazz seems to have times when her lady bits are swollen and she is un-trainable and forgets everything she ever knew. It lasts a few days and then she's back to normal.

They shouldn't have Lesley - my understanding is that they take out all the tackle - ovaries and all. It can take some months for their hormones to crash completely but Jazz was done ages ago, wasn't she?

Poet, I am surprised that the rescue centre you got her from didn't spay her before re-homing. That is the usual policy. I'd be inclined to contact them and ask whether they will do it for free - it is most unusual for a rescue dog (male or female) not to be done.

we already asked Clare and the response was no. The RSPCA policy is to give you a voucher towards the cost, I think the voucher is for £65 but our local vet charges about 3 times that for the op.

I know cheshire dogs trust do it for considerably less but I think we'll get her done locally, peace of mind and all that.

The RSPCA aren't that helpful with vets bills! They won't pay a penny towards any of the vets bills for her kennel cough.

We've always had to have our rescue dogs spayed. We have usually been given vouchers to get a certain amount of money off. I think places like Battersea just wouldn't have the time to do all the dogs in their care.

I guess they've changed their policies then. Try the PDSA - they usually offer a good price, and with your OH being out of work at the moment, they might even do it for free.

Ruby's was £70 something I think.

Well, being the general biology nerd I am, its KS3 Biology ... 505420547_7a5fa5ef06.jpg?v=0

The menstrual cycle is controlled by 4 hormones. They are all interlinked and stimulate the production of other ones so its a bit confusing.

The first is FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) which in secreted from the pituitary gland. So, I'm thinking even if she has no ovaries, the pituitary gland will still be secreting hormones and try to start off the process, but it wouldn't stimulate egg development or Oestrogen secretion.

Oestrogen and Progesterone secreted from the ovaries, so I don't think she'd have those which thicken the uterus lining, stimulate egg release and then maintain/break down the lining.

I would think, she would release FSH but I'm not sure. I'll try and find out

I wonder if this whining habit she seems to have developed is related to her season too :?

Yes she will be wanting to get out and mate with a male dog at the bad time so will have to watch she does not get out. I had a dog jump into the garden and mate with one of mine - I was not amused I can tell you especially as the owner just laughed!!

The female after spaying should not display any swelling of the vulva at all as all the bits have been taken away.

that explains it then, thanks.

She's driving us nuts with howling and whining, I'm sure the neighbours think we're torturing her or something

Still love her to bits though ;)
