Molly's in season, help! :0/ **added a video***

Recommended Posts

Mrs Molly seems to have gone into season. The RSPCA told us to wait until she had a season before getting her neutered as they didn't know if she'd been done or not.

There's drips of blood all over her bed, the kitchen floor and various other places. She's very subdued and sleepy and she's licking that area a lot.

How long will the blood last and is it likely to get heavier?

Is there anything we can do to limit the, erm, mess?

:?

it usually starts off heavier and then waters down a bit after a week or so (sorry to be so graphic). I think Bracken's was 2-3 weeks, but as I say its better the 2nd week. You may find she's a bit clingy to you and following you around a lot.

I dont now cos Bracken has been "done". But when she was in season I covered the sofa, and followed her around with a mop! Those throw away Flash wipes come in handy too.

OH usually wiped it up with his feet in socks :notalk:

I would imagine its only a little bit with a dog Molly's size though isnt it?

Yurk! You can buy special pants, but a lot of people just pop an old pair of knickers on pooch with some kind of absorbent stuff in. Depends how easygoing she is really, I'd suggest a reusable nappy for a small baby on her as she's tiny, but she might not go for it.

We bought Mika dog pants for Jazz - she started her first season just before we were due to go up to Edinburgh for a couple of days and attend the Edinburgh get-together

We had to ask Louise to find a dog-sitter for us as we didn't fancy a trail of dogs following us all around Edinburgh

They are good but with hindsight, I would just buy some childrens knickers in a colour similar to the dogs fur and cut a hole for the tail. The flow isn't too bad so just knickers should be enough.

Lesley, I speed read that and saw "we got jazz pants...":lol:

Emma, that's very kind but how do they get on with having no. 1s and 2 s while wearing pants? I don't have to keep whipping them off and on do I? Sorry but I had to ask

Yes it is true they do have to come off before pees and poohs but TBH i dont find it too much of a hassle as they are so useful for her to wear in the house and having beige carpets and a girl on heat the two dont go together!:lol::lol:

Justine if you want to give them a go they are yours -if they dont work out then no worries - nothing ventured nothing gained :D

We were lucky in one way when Cookie had her season as we have wooden floors everywhere so we just followed the trail with wet wipes :vom:

A lot of the time she took care of it all herself as she went into a deep depression and didn't want to get out of her bed. She laid in there and mopped herself up every now and again.

It was not going to the park and being able to let her off the lead that got me. It would probably be ok with Molly as she's small and you could pick her up if other male dogs showed attention but Cooks is just too big.

Good luck and I hope she sails through her season.

hi Emma, that's so kind of you but I tend to leave the back door open so she can go when she wants to as she doesn't 'tell' me when she wants to go, we kind of have to spot the signs and I can't always be around to watch her but it was a very kind offer.

She's is very lethargic right now and I've covered the sofa with a throw that I can bung in the wash and we have tiled/laminated floor so just hoping it's all over soon

Men, they have no idea what us females have to go thru have they! One of our banties is broody too, the hormones around here at the moment are rife!

Bless her, when Holly had her first season, followed very quickly by another  she was very quiet for a day or so, then when she got used to the idea of what was going on she sorted herself out, and for a medium dog left no mess bless her.

Time to book the vets appointment now so she can be done as soon as it's over (assuming that's what you are going to do  )

Its usually 3 months after the season that we do the spay bit - gives the uterus time to get back to normal before she is spayed.

She will clean up after herself quite well when she gets used to it and its a bit later on that you will have to watch for other dogs coming around "courting" when she is "ripe" for the picking so to speak and she will also be keen!! Hussies eh!.

It will be better once she is done.

Oh yes, don't spay when she has an 'active' uterus - that's what got us an incontinent cat (although it's not her fault, she had an emergency c section and she'd have bled to death without the hysterectomy). I'm now stuck giving her drugs, which she hates and make her drool, twice a day for the rest of her life. :(
