We're all planning walk in runs! PART 2!

Recommended Posts

I'd say get concrete/slabs is you can :)

It'll keep the hemcore better, and will mean nothing can dig up into the WIR.

How big is the slope? Could you some how bank it up using bricks under the one edge to make it flat and slab it?

Hi there, newbie here. Thinking of buying a (green eglu) in next couple of weeks and after looking through this topic also think an avaries4u WIR would be preferable to trying to build one from scratch (as we are not too great at DIY and the base will be enough work!). Does anyone have one of these in or near Edinburgh where we could have a look - it's a bit of an outlay without seeing one for real. Thinking about 12ft by 6ft - think this should be enough room for 3/4 chickens (not sure yet re hybrids or Light Susex, Rhode Island Red etc).

PS Avaries 4u look really good but is anyone aware of anything similar but based in Scotland - might cut down on delivery costs.

Thanks in advance Jeanette

Have just been having second thoughts about my new WIR :anxious:

It is going on an earth base with a built in mesh floor. I didn't go for a solid base i.e. slabs because the ground slopes and OH didn't want a large slab of concrete on the lawn.

But I wanted to change from woodchips on the floor because I seem to have to change them a lot with the Eglu set up and I wanted to change to Hemcore or such like.

Have you thought about using something like Bedmax shavings. I use them straight onto soil in my WIR and I've only changed them once in six months. I do put down a foot of them though and use stalosan. Oh, mine also aren't locked in the run all day so that would make a difference.

ANH above is in love with her Tony run  why not pm her. :D

:lol::lol:

Hibbyjint and I have been in PM contact  .

Fantasticjudyann, I use Hemcore or Easibed on soil and only change it every 3 months or so. I collect up the biggest poos but the rest get absorbed into the bedding very well. Keeping it all dry with a roof is the key.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions :)

While I can see the logic of raising slabs on one side to accommodate the slope , OH is still being very resistant to slabs. My run is going to have a mesh floor so will be fox resistant whether I slab or not. So probably slabbing is not a runner!

Anne and ANH -the Hemcore Bedmax idea sounds promising although not as cheap as the wood chip which I can get for £1 per 80litre bag

The run is going to have a sloping roof so it will stay dry from the top but how do I stop the rain getting in from the sides :?:

Someone suggested Tarpaflex glass tarpaulins which sound great but where do I position them? I don't want the chooks to live in a sauna

Ta da! (it's just on this one side, so ventilation is unaffected).

Concrete is done :D:dance:

Its lumpy bumpy and probably looks awful ... but its mine

Had to mix it all on the drive then carry it up the side passage and up the garden

In the end it did go the side I wanted, so we can see if from the house

chicken+run+4.jpg

Will see what its like when its dry tomorrow

Well done Lewis!

Concreting is far easier said than done. Fingers crossed for this morning - we had an unforecast -3C overnight.

We are about to get a quote from the wonderful Tony, having settled on an 11 x 8ft run with classic in then cube outside (we have a classic and want to get a cube - did I already say that?!) and have been working out how we'd like it done. I hope there isn't copyright on CookieMonster's cube attachment version as that is pretty much what we going for.

Thanks to ANH for showing us her Eglu and "Tony" run :D Great set up. Will get my (green eglu) ordered as soon as we make a decision about the run. Wrote to Tony on Sunday night for a quote - here's hoping he comes back quickly as now eager to get organised  Also, have come across a company called CMS Animal Housing based in Lancaster - has anyone on here used their runs? They seem a fair bit cheaper and delivery cost half. The guy has responded to queries very quickly and informatively. Any information would be greatly appreciated. To the novice, this website is an absolute godsend so thanks guys

Went to B&Q today to get the clear roof, batons, screws, lock + handles etc :)

Should hopefully get the panels started tomorrow if the concrete is ready + its stopped raining :D

Thanks for the pic Andrew. The tarpaflex looks really good 8)

Did you use one large one or several small ones. How did you join the small ones?

It's one large sheet, 2m x 4.6m (6' x 15'), which is just about big enough to cover that one side.

We've just ordered a Tony

... and made the wise choice to get him to put it up. I know we could, but we are doing loads of other diy & allotmenty stuff, etc so it would probably sit there and torment us for a while.

Due second week in March so a good 2 weeks for OH to sort the slab base.

How is your run coming along Lewis?

D

BTW - all tarpaflex info, etc EXTEMELY useful - thanks everyone
