We're all planning walk in runs! PART 2!

Recommended Posts

Too many things to think about my head is going to explode. Just had a chook planning session in the garden with hubbie. I had just talked him round the cube on teh outside jobbie when he realised how much brick work he would need to do to get the ground the egloo would stand on level. :wall:

So current options are

12x7 with cube inside and only an egg and poo port. WOuld have to do massive cleaning in there when bedding has been removed.

9x7 with cube on the outside

12 x 7 and an eglu inside with egg port and poo port???? With the option of buying a second eglu further down the line (starting with 4 chicks)

Looks like floor is going to be solid.

:think::think::?:?

If you were to have two eglus you may find that all the chooks decide to pile into the one so the other becomes a fairly expensive ornament in the WIR! :lol:

If you are likely to expand your flock in the future and finances allow then I would go for the cube..I started with one eglu and then purchased a second and then ended up buying a cube anyways :roll:

Remember the cube is HEAVY and without the wheel base would be almost impossible to move. Cleaning it in situ within the run would mean the bedding would get soggy :think: So i spose I am saying cube on the outside but then you would loose valuable run space....... :? So maybe not.....

I know what you mean about LOADS of things going round in your head...we have all been there when planning WIR!

sorry more questions............

hubbies idea of cube in situ is that when we need to do the BIG clean then we do a BIG clean of the bedding as well, clear out the bedding, wash the floor and the house and then put fresh bedding in. In between i can go in and hand wash in situ and i shouldnt be too messy.

But i do like the idea of it not being in the house.........but i want the biggest possible run.............but........ oh where is the bar of chocolate.....

I go on holiday tomorrow and will have this going round my head all week!!!

I would always go for the cube, I started with an eglu myself :lol: I would think twice about putting the cube in the run unless you are very strong as it is very awkward to move around IMO however attached to the outside is perfect as there is no need to move it around too much.

It's definately a personal choice and we have all been there, my WIR started out life with the eglu on the floor in there, but my back problem caused me to have to re think the situation hence the cube in now on outside with a concrete base and my back is much happier. :D

I dont do a BIG clean everytime I clean the cube, I handwash the cube regularlary, however it gets jetwashed probably about every month depending on how dirty it looks.

The WIR gets throughly cleaned out at the time of the BIG wash, but as you can see there will be times where the WIR will not need cleaning but the cube may do... if I am making sense... :?

I know what you mean Cookie!

Yup! Same here...bucket wash cube once a week (still a fair bit of water!) and then FULL clean of cube and whole run once every 4-6 weeks :D

How about...cube inside run on the wheel base and a BIG door for you to roll cube out backwards for cleaning...then little doors for egg port and door handle?

:shh: Don`t let all my secrets out! :lol: I am actually looking at forum, emailing your and updating the database with stuff so **blowing big raspberry at you**

All systems are go for my WIR extension! I have placed the order and am just waiting on the guy to confirm build date! :D

I cant remember exactly but I think that is roughly my size of my WIR :) I am having a max of 5 girls in there as two are Orps.

IT's probably a good idea to work out how many chickens would be happy in the run your planning aswell, as that gives you a much better idea of your future options ;)

hubbie says its 8 for that size run although please correct me if i am wrong!! We have a old square coffee table from ikea that we are going to put in there too.

The plan is to get 4 chicks now, then add 2 in a years time and 2 another year after that so we get egg rotation if you like....

:shock::shock::shock::shock::shock:

I have just had an (informal) quote to have a concrete base laid for the WIR. It will be 2.75m x 6.5m (21ft x 9ft), and includes levelling the sloping ground (but does not include the cost of removing the dug out earth)...

:shock::shock::shock::shock::shock:

£1200-£1500

Is this normal!?!?! I have never had anything like this done before, so have nothing to compare it to. The guy was recommended by my neighbour, and I have no reason to think that he is not a decent workman (I have seen the work he did for my neighbour). But WOW!

Any thoughts please?

It was an informal quote, just to give me an idea of what to expect (a heart attack, methinks...), and when I asked how much just to lay the concrete, without levelling the site, he said it would take 3 men one day, and that would cost £800. So £266 per man, including materials. I would imagine that it would take quite a lot of concrete to fill a space 9ft x 21ft, but then I have no idea how much concrete costs! How thick is concrete usually?

Am now considering laying slabs (and doing it ourselves) as the quote from Tony came in at a shade over £1000 (which was already a considerable sum!). But one of the main reasons for the WIR was the badgers that live in our garden - would hate to find that they had dug their way into the run one day, and I think concrete would be the best way to avoid this. Not sure slabs would have the same resistance...

we have badgers too. Hubbie was going to lay slaps on a bed of hardcore and whatever else you put on top of hard core. He said putting the concrete down would be tough as you really need to pour it in all in one go which is tough if you dont have it on tap apparently.....

Just had new quote from tony for 12x6 with outside cube, think this might be a goer...... hubbie almost asleep so only got a grunt out of him.... :silenced:
