My List (My Name is Earl style - sort of!)

What really really really gets me is people who undertake. So what if i'm not moving into the slow lane i only keep going if i'd have to pull out again in a minute. :!::!::!: grrrrrrrrrr. And even if somones hogging the lane it's soooooooooooo dangerous.

I am going to have to be a bit controversial here...I agree that cutting people up by dodging in and out of traffic is dangerous but drivers are supposed to check that whatever lane they move into, it is safe to do so, so why should it be dangerous to undertake - especially when some inconsiderate numpty is hogging the middle lane. The alternative is to make four separate manouevres to get round them - potentially more dangerous IMHO.

I would not undertake if there is a driver in the first lane who will soon be overtaken by the middle lane driver but I have seen drivers in the middle lane for miles when there is no-one to overtake and that really makes me seethe. The said middle lane driver often seems to be completely oblivious to the surroundings and THAT has got to be dangerous!

Rant over. Sorry!

If you are in one of the inside lanes apparently it is legal to undertake as long as your way ahead is clear. Coming home from Dorset a couple of years back, going on the dual carriageway at Ringwood, there was a queue of cars in the outside lane - but the lane I was in was empty - not anything in sight, so I plodded along in my lane and when I got to Cadnam several miles later I saw a car in front. Mind you after I went past everybody else took the hint. I couldn't see a reason for it - very strange. My brother informed me that it was perfectly legal, and on the motorway slip roads it is also OK. Someone might want to check on that as it was a long time ago and things change constantly.

It is illegal to flash (with lights  ) the lane hogger as a hint.

The problem is that there is no specific offence for either hogging the middle lane or undertaking (or flashing [with lights!!] come to that) I have come across people being prosecuted for driving without due care and attention or without consideration for other road users (which is the same section 3 Road Traffic Act) in both circumstances. (I work in a Court)

I have just found **this** in the Highway Code which is what is often referred to when these offences come before the court. To those middle lane lovers out there, I would point out paragraphs 133 and 138

I seem to remember that somewhere else it states that flashing of the lights is the same as sounding your horn, ie it is only to let other drivers know that you are there rather than being used as a rebuke. Personally, I think that that definition fits the bill if you are wanting someone to move over to the inside lane!!!

Anyway - I will now stop the hijacking of this thread and apologise for my soap box stance!!

 Actually, I think I mentioned this on page one or two - hidden within a host of other pedantries

Anyway, came back to this thread to say I want the banning of "ripe and ready to eat" avocadoes, when they are patently not ripe and ready to eat. Avocadoes are not ready when one is unable to cut them in half with a sharpened vegetable knife

Gosh, I've ploughed through all 7 pages and am ashamed to admit: I agree with all of them :oops:

I still have one to add (amazed no-one has said this yet):

People who misuse the apostrophe (as in tomato's, potato's etc)!!!

I actually stopped to rub out the apostrophe on our local farm shop's board advertising an up-coming open day where one could apparently learn all about "BEE'S" (the bee's what? Knees perhaps?)! Mind you, I haven't got as far as going around with a marker pen to add apostrophes where they are missing as Lynn Truss claimed she did in "Eats, Shoots and Leaves"!!!

I thought about adding this one but there was a HUGE thread on grammar issues last year and I seem to remember that it got quite heated and I wasn't sure that that was a good idea to resurrect that again!

The problem is that I then became quite paranoid about the posts that I made in case I added a redundant apostrophe or made any howlers!

One does not like to get on the wrong side of the Omleteers! :shameonu::wink:

I saw a great one today that made me laugh.

There was a huge house with a Vote Green banner up in the garden. It had two giant gas guzzling 4x4s in the drive.

The point is 4x4s for no apparent reason (plus I thought the irony was brilliant).

I wouldn't mind but i've never yet been undertaken safely the only times i ever have been have been motor bikes with four inches of space or four by fours who make me do an emergancy stop in the fast lane because they pull round me doing at least 100 and pull out so close i can't see their back number plate. A friend was also nearly killed becuase somone undertook them and miss judged it and plowed straight into the passengers door.

...and I fully agree that all of those examples are incredibly dangerous. I can honestly say that I have never yet been exceeding the speed limt when I have passed a middle lane driver on their inside and, every time I have done it, there has been at least a further mile before I have had to move out of the inside lane. Maybe I am just unlucky!
