Hayfever advice please

Recommended Posts

I have bought some more cetirizine and some loratadine for her to try to see which works best.

....they are one and the same drug - one is the generic name for the other.

Mine seems worse this year - groan - I was strimming the (too long) grass on my allotment yesterday and could hardly breathe afterwards!

I had to go to YS's school yesterday to give him his hayfever tablet as he'd forgotten to take it in the morning  His eyes were so red and puffy poor thing. I think he's finding it much worse this year.

My mum read something that the tablets are best taken at night. Anyone else heard this?

A wealth of knowledge here :D

My girl (aged 14) suffers with her eyes a lot & has Sodium Cromoglicate eye drops, which do work to a degree, & I know are the same as Clarityn allergy & so forth.

Is there an alternative that might work better, non prescription?

The prescription has run out & I can't get it renewed for a couple of days but she needs something for over the weekend,so we might as well try something different & see if its more effective 8)

Cetrizine is Zirtek and Loratadine is Claratyn I think

I have had hayfever all my life as it is hereditary, most of my cousins have it too. My mum used to count my sneezes when I was little, I would sneeze over 50 times, one after the other until I ended up on the floor shaking. I used to take Piriton. However, I am very forgetful, and don't like taking medication, and as I got older used to forget to take the tablets with me. By the time I was 20 I was not bothering to even buy the tablets.

I believe this lack of drug taking has helped my body to build up immunity against the reaction to pollen as now my hayfever is slight. I do suffer from itchy eyes and have to remember to not rub them or the film over the eye will swell up. I usually think I have a cold around mid March (my hayfever is March to September) until someone will mention hayfever then I realise what it is :D

I have VILE hayfever - it used to get so bad that I developed seasonal asthma and was prescribed an inhaler!

Cetirizine (Zirtek) and loratadine (Clarityn) are 2nd generation antihistamines. If they really aren't working for your daughter (they didn't for me - even at a rate of 5 a day!) try 3rd generation (prescription only). Fexofenadine (Telfast), levocetirizine (Xyzal - my favourite) or mizolastine (Mizollen). I also use a steroid nosespray, called Nasacort - I don't particulary like having to use steriods, but then again, it's better than asthma!

Other than drugs, showering before bed to remove pollen from the skin and hair, not hanging clothes outside to dry (pollen sticks to the clothes and can cause a rash), local honey, keeping windows closed, air purifiers...

I have also bought one of those Lloyds allergy relievers - can't be sure if it's working, as the pollen count is so high this year.

Good luck!

i was prescribed fexofenadine last year for an unexplianed severe allergic reaction and put in a repeat prescription for them this year for my hayfever, wow they make a difference. Last year i wasn't too bad but the year before i was using eye drops, nasal spray, loratadine, windows shut etc and ended up with an inhaler.

I can't survive without tablets and have tried honey but left it too late this year.

Window filters are great too for the bedroom. think they were form Allergy best buys.

Yes, I did Chickvic, a couple of summers ago when it was really hot (remember that  ). After the initial droning on the fan, I soon got used to it. Would leave it switched on in the bedroom with windows and door closed all day.

It did seem to work. Mine was an air purifier and ironiser. The ironiser draws positive ions out of the air (pollen) by pumping out negative ions (something like that, only got a C at GCSE Chemistry  ). It does make the surface dusty, so put a piece of paper under the contraption. Or dust more often.:wink:

Hope it works for you. Got mine in ARGoose!:wink:

Hi

I have had hayfever for years :( comes around March and goes around July. I have tried prescriptions from GP, Homeopathy and piriton. I also wheeze with the hayfever.

This year I tried local honey and infusions of nettles from just outside my back garden. 1 table spoon of honey morning and evening and at least 3 nettle infusions a day and I cant believe how good I have been. I have taken piriton only about twice since february, used inhalers only once or twice, my eyes have not been itchy although I do sneeze a bit.

I do use fresh nettles (not the t bags from the supermarket) and only the top of the nettles.

About a good handful in the tea pot.

Hope that helps

sue

I must have missed this thread but just went on the "search" button for hayfever as I knew that you lot must have some good ideas.

I never had hayfever until about three years now and it is getting to be really bad. I have not stopped sneezing today and I want to scratch my eyes out!! :x

Off to get some local honey now so fingers crossed!
