Sweetcorn lollipops

Recommended Posts

As a treat I give my chooks the frozen sweetcorn cobs. I let them defrost a little from the freezer beofre giving it to them, but because its frozen slightly it takes them longer to demolish, they love it :D and its cheaper than fresh!

What a great idea!

My two can demolish them at stupidly high speeds!

(When they are allowed them... Sweetcorn appears to upset poor Gingers delicate stomach... Not that it seems to bother her in any way....)

Jennyhenny suggested these to me last week. She sent me a super picture of her girls and the swinging corn.(she hangs hers up) When I tried it, I very nearly had a chicken with a black eye, bent beak and bump on the back of her head. They loved it....kept them busy for at least 5 mins.

Bought mine in Aldi 8 halves for 99p...bargain!

I tried this at the weekend - was brilliant!

I also hung mine up, and it kept them busy for ages! Swinging backwards and forwards - kept me laughing watching them them too!

For a while they even forgot their current master plans of a) breaking into the veg patch and b) trying to get into inside the house. At least a few hours of free ranging time each day is spent trying to break in to either place, so any distraction is fantastic!

Yep its almost a shorter lasting version of the pecka blocks isnt it! :D

all three of mine wandered in the back door for the 1st time this weekend! dont know who was more shocked us or the dog! you should have seen her face! I think she has resigned herself to being bottom of the pecking order! As if having her garden taken over wasnt enough!, now they are trying to take over the kitchen

Have just read this thread and so went ahead and put a partly defrosted sweetcorn cob in the run.

Am so proud of Coco - def the bottom of the pecking order, she even gets ostracised at night time and sleeps on her own in the nest box! All the girls looked at the swwetcorn as tho it had come from outer space except Coco. She was in there and managed to drag it away and eat quite a bit before the others cottoned on and dragged it off her. You go girl!!

Sorry...Silly question time.

Did you cook it first? Tried it a few weeks ago and "Ooops, word censored!"ody was interested, ended up in the bin, wondered if i cooked it maybe they would eat it. They love cooked asparagus, do you think I just have posh hens???

LOL maybe you do have posh hens! I just did as suggested by others - bought frozen cobs, left out for about 1/2 hr and then put in the run. They are fighting over it now.

It's the first treat they've really gone for tho. Have tried several other suggestions and they've ignored it.
