Redwing
I bought six first class stamps the other day and noticed that they now have 'cutouts' in them, sort of two lozenge shaped cuts through the stamp but with the cut-out bit still attached (am I making any sense at all?!) We are having a debate in the office about what use these cuts are in the stamp the most credible explaination so far is that it is to prevent the stamp being peeled off and re-used if not franked however a 24 hour experiment has proved that it can be sucessfully removed intact, the envelope has been through all our pressing/franking machines I suggested I post here and have said I will have the answer in the next 24 hours, the others say we only talk about chickens so it is unlikely So...does anyone know? The Dogmother
You're right Tasha - it's to prevent them being peeled off and used again. Not that it works as you pointed out - we've tried too and they still come off with a little care. I've saved our company £££s over the years by peeling off unfranked stamps and re-using them - my contribution to bucking the system

Redwing
I wonder how many people got paid to think up that waste of time then there was probably a think tank involved and the cut outs probably have a flash name Thanks for the swift answer
The Dogmother
You betcha! They also have new watermarks on them - that'll have cost a fortune too

Lewis
Only the self adhesive sheets or books of stamps have these little tabs. How else do you get stamps? You can buy big sheets of them which you tear the stamp off and lick the back of them Are these new stamps recent or just the self adhesive ones that have been around for a while? So did I but I saw some recently, I think they were the ones that aren't standard prices and build up to make a bigger total amount
Looney
The new stamps are far harder to remove and reuse than the old ones. We always save and reuse unfranked stamps. Saying that, we have a lot of stamps here from all different decades so we use those. It's quite good fun and makes the envelopes look a bit more interesting!
