PaulineG
We had our 2 lovely chickens stolen from their Eglu on Monday night this week. The thieves simply opened the nest box and removed the chickens. Has anyone else had chickens stolen from their Eglu or got any ideas on how the nest box door might be secured? Olly
Really sorry to hear that. I think the only thing would be to secure the Eglu within a walk-in run of some sort, or to have security on your garden. What an awful thing for anyone to do. craftyhunnypie
How horrible! I know exactly how you are feeling - my Frenchie met the same fate. Some nasty people about, who don't understand how much they are hurting you. So sorry for you. Emma.x
kitbag
I am so sorry to hear this. Inform the police as quickly as you can. I can't believe somebody would do this. I hope this doesn't put you off getting more chooks in the future.
PaulineG
Thanks to all those people who have replied to my post about our stolen girls. We informed the police immediately and they have been out to our property complete with forensic team - it seems that 'chicken rustling' is becoming increasingly common - the thieves are targetting people like us who have a small number of pet chickens - they presume we won't report it to the police! We live in a very rural part of East Kent - have PIR lighting, 2 dogs and our garden is surrounded by thick hedgerow, but they still found a way through the bushes and over the stock fencing - it was clearly a very well planned attack as you can't see our chickens from the road at all. If you are in a similar rural spot please take care and if anything happens report it straight away. Someone mentioned that there had been talk about securing the port door previously on the Forum - if anyone can remember any details I would be very grateful - we want to get some more chickens but my 7 yr old son has been so upset by this that I feel we need to have made some attempt to make them more secure before we do so. I probably should be able to search for it myself but as a new user am still finding my way around!
Kit
Pauline I am so sorry to read that somebody has stolen your hens. How awful for you and especially your son. Why do people steal chickens? So selfish and what low life! Hope you find the thread that you are looking for. Kit
Tara.F
Oh! dear! what can I add? it's a terrible thing to happen, and for what? chickens aren't worth much in resale value? I just don't understand! If they were stealing the actual eglu it would make more sense Here's hoping they get their comeuppance the little beggars and I'm so sorry your little boy has had to face such an unnatural tragedy
Lewis
Someone mentioned that there had been talk about securing the port door previously on the Forum - if anyone can remember any details I would be very grateful Someone mentioned taking off the egg port handle and making it a bit like an allen key so that you take the handle out into the garden with you, put it back onto the eglu and then open the egg port. Found it: How can I lock the eglu door - to deter humans?
