TheChookKeeper
Hello all, Just interested to know how much we all pay for our layers pellets? It came as rather a surprise when my shopping trip to buy some came to £24 this morning... but I've since noticed that I did buy more than usual, and that I pay £6.99 for a 20kg bag. Is this average? Good? Bad? It's the closest place to me, only about 5 minutes down the road, so very handy, but there are 1 or 2 other places further a field I could go, if I thought I could get it a bit cheaper (I know, I'm a tight wad, but I'm going to blame it on the "credit crunch" ) Thanks! Plum
I can pay £6 ish but prefer Dorall and horrell (or something like that). They are £8 I think. So what else did you buy?
TheChookKeeper
Sorry - didn't explain that very well did I!!! I bought 3 20kg bags (5x chooks, and 4x ducks get through it quite quickly, and I don't like shopping too often!) I also bought a 5kg bag of posh growers pellets for the baby ducks - they don't actually get much, as the adults eat it all first, but we're working on it! The layers pellets I get is el cheapo stuff, shops own brand. I would love to keep buying the organic stuff, but it is rather more expensive, at around £10-£12 a bag I believe... so doubt they are trying to encourage people to buy their own stuff. Redwing
Thats not bad at all I was using Mole Valley Farmers layers pellets at £6 ish for 25kg that was the cheapest I could find My last two bags of feed have been the ex batts food so have been about £10 a bag, I have two motheaten chooks that need some feathers! My next step is Garvo feed which is again about £10 but is supposed to be excellent My chicks and growers get the £6 for 25kg stuff as they eat tons and I would be broke in a week if I lavished £10 a sack on them
Yolky
We buy Allen and Page free range stuff (I think its organic) as we just carried on with the stuff we got from Omlet. I think it is 8 or 9quid a big bag. As we only have three I don't mind paying the little bit extra as a bag lasts us ages, I recon about 2-3 months a bag (although I don't remember exactly as when we are getting low I just tell the OH to grab a bag on his way home from work)
TheChookKeeper
Thanks all - just wanted to make sure that I wasn't paying over the odds if I might be able to do better elsewhere - but it sounds like at best I'd only save a pound or two, so not worth the extra petrol! I'll continue to support my "local shop"!!! Thanks!
Snowy
The Allen and page organic has shot up in recent months. It was £10 a sack, but is now £13 or £14 £6.99 is very good for non organic - it is at least £8 everywhere round here.
Egluntyne
I pay £7.35p.
stoice
My usual is Marriages pellets/mash at £6.50 from a place on my way home from work called Upsons. (Interestingly, it's cheaper then buying marriages feed from the marriages shop!) Or there's a garden and pet centre on another route home that sells Copdock Mill feed at £7.80. I find the Allen and Page feed more pricey, and the organic stuff even more pricey (I wanted them to enjoy organic feed but my girls aren't so keen - they prefer the cheap stuff! ) Pets at Home now sell chicken feed and corn but it is RIDICULOUSLY over priced IMO. I'd say you had a good deal if your chooks enjoy it, keep getting it!
Cooks
I buy Allen and Page and it's just under £9.00 I think.. although I never buy it on it's own so I just pay the bill and leave without checking too much.. I tried a cheaper one and wasn't impressed, my girls didn't like it much either madams!
Patricia W
My Allen and Page ex- batt pellets were 10.45 and they had to get them in specially. I think the last " ordinary " lot were about £8-9. But then I get the mixed corn, the treats, etc etc ..... spoiled lot they are.
Falkor
I can get Allen & Page for £7.80 (Cooks...got a bag for you in the car ) and Dodson and Horrell for £7.10. My lot are on the A&P Ex-Batt stuff at the mo and it is £9.50 for pellets and £10 for crumb , I might have the wrong way round
simon_blackwell1
Where does everyone buy their layers' pellets from? I'm in London and the local pet shops don't seem to have woken up to chickens as a concept. Am happy with the Omlet stuff, but am aware that delivery is not cheap. TheChookKeeper
I get mine from a local horse/pet supplier, called Broadfeed, but there are more and more places springing up all the time that sell chicken bits - certainly I know of a couple of garden centres around here that sell it. You can also buy online from lots of places - although as you say, delivery of 20kg bags can be cost prohibitive! It might be worth asking one of your local pet shops if they could get you a few bags in especially? They probably all come from the same suppliers, and they know you'd be guaranteed custom... if there is one thing you can be sure of with chickens, it's that come hell and high water, they will still EAT!!! madchickenlady
I, er, haven't a clue what brand it is, but a 20kg sack of layers pellets from my local pet warehouse costs about 7 pounds. It lasts ages, though, as my girls much prefer eating my plants....
beulah59
I can't get Allen and Page locally - or at least, I can't find anywhere that stocks it - and can't afford to pay postage on top, so will have to use the cheap feed from a local stockist
Falkor
I sourced my A&P feed using this: http://www.smallholderfeed.co.uk/Find-a-Stockist.aspx
beulah59
Thanks - the nearest is a few miles away, and we pass by occasionally, but not often enough to use it regularly
Cooks
I can get Allen & Page for £7.80 (Cooks...got a bag for you in the car ) oooh you little star!
Helly Welly
OMG we've been getting it from pets at home. It's recently gone up to about £9/25kg. Is this too much then?
joybelle
I get all my chooks supplies from Bletsoe-Brown in Sywell northampton. I used to have spillers layers pellets and mixed corn sometimes dodson and horrel. The last time I rang an order they said they had also started to sell Heygates mixed corn and layers pellets so I tried them. The corn is £5.70 for 25kg and pellets £5.65. They deliver and charge only 50p per item. I ring them on a Monday and delivery is the next day. Its a very good service but not sure how far they will deliver. Boybeck
Pets At Home in Fareham, Hampshire have recently been increasing the number of chicken products they sell. It's quite handy because I can walk there. They sell Dodson and Horrell Layers' Pellets for £9.99 20kg.
Tom
We pay about £7 a sack for Marriages pellets
