Fly nightmare

Recommended Posts

My house in literally infested with these horrible bif flies at the moment.

They are unlike any fly I have seen before - large, pale brown, slow & dozy.

I have a conservatory roof on part of my kitchen & there are heaps of them up there.

I have just opened the dining room wondow where there were over 30 butting against it!

Any idea what they are & how I can get rid of them?

Problem is,they are up at roof level, attracted to the glass conservatory roof in the kitchen, so too high for me to swt & too high to put a zapper either.

We had a few last year & I am wondering if they have laid eggs up there on top of the kitchen cabinets & they are now hatching.

It looks like they are Horse or Cluster Flies, from what I have found on Google :?

The kitchen cabinet tops are way to high for me to see the top off, think I will have to enlist hubby for this one.

As usual Christian is a mine of information. We have garlic, we have elder - flies watch out! I might try the elder in the greenhouse, pesky things - now that the greenfly have overdosed on the garlic (heh heh heh). I thought tansy was another herb that was hung up to keep the flies away. But searching for natural methods, I found this site:

I'm off to find some pennyroyal (I think it's minty). As it seems to repel mozzies I might just have a bath in it!!!

when we bought our house, we discovered a huge fly nest in a crack in one of the walls and the house filled with flies! horrible things!! but we have found a few drops of citronella oil mixed in water in a spray bottle deters them. we spray our window frames and it stops them coming in to the house! but u got to respray if it rains. got get one of those fancy battery powered electric fly swatters! fun to use!!

happy swatting :o)

I think that these may be Cluster Flies. It is worth checking out your loft. Spraying around the window frames helps. I hav found that they can also sit in the frames towards the end of the summer too. I have opended the windows before (on one side of the house only) only to get a face full, it is revolting. We have never had them in the loft, only 1 window frame.

At least they don't bite :!:

We have a lot of these

CLEGS

as there are so many sheep in neighbouring fields.

The garden is OK but I have to cover up when I walk the dog or I get bitten.

You hardly ever feel them alight, just the bite, but if you do, just before they strike, you'll see them raise their tail ..... all the better to get more power behind that attack, I guess.

I react quite badly and the resultant weal itches for a week.
