Cinnamon
My house in literally infested with these horrible bif flies at the moment. They are unlike any fly I have seen before - large, pale brown, slow & dozy. I have a conservatory roof on part of my kitchen & there are heaps of them up there. I have just opened the dining room wondow where there were over 30 butting against it! Any idea what they are & how I can get rid of them? The Dogmother
Not seen them.... yet I have a UV fly zapper. I plug it in at night and they are drawn to it and fried. It works in the day too, just not quite so effective at attracting them. Got it cheaply from Dyas. Hope that you get rid of them soom Sarah. Helly Welly
There must be something attracting them to that particular area. We're fnas of fly swatters as we never have too many to cope with. I'd go with Clarets idea of a UV zapper.
clootie
*shudder* I really hate flies. Hope you get shot of them soon.
Cinnamon
Problem is,they are up at roof level, attracted to the glass conservatory roof in the kitchen, so too high for me to swt & too high to put a zapper either. We had a few last year & I am wondering if they have laid eggs up there on top of the kitchen cabinets & they are now hatching. It looks like they are Horse or Cluster Flies, from what I have found on Google The kitchen cabinet tops are way to high for me to see the top off, think I will have to enlist hubby for this one. Alis girls
Excellent idea - hubbies do have their uses - just have to find them first
The Dogmother
Good call Sarah, get his warfare suit out! The zappers only need an electrical socket and the tray emptyign of deaders every now and then.

Christian
That episode freaked me out Hope you sort the flies out Sarah. If you have an elder tree near you, a few twigs with leaves are supposed to deter flies.
Valkyrie
As usual Christian is a mine of information. We have garlic, we have elder - flies watch out! I might try the elder in the greenhouse, pesky things - now that the greenfly have overdosed on the garlic (heh heh heh). I thought tansy was another herb that was hung up to keep the flies away. But searching for natural methods, I found this site: http://www.gardenguides.com/pests/tips/herbal.asp I'm off to find some pennyroyal (I think it's minty). As it seems to repel mozzies I might just have a bath in it!!!
Old Speckled Hen
I have loads of these in my conservatory. I just extend the dyson hose and suck em up. They make a satisfying pop pop pop as they reverberate up the tube.

Drew and Alan
when we bought our house, we discovered a huge fly nest in a crack in one of the walls and the house filled with flies! horrible things!! but we have found a few drops of citronella oil mixed in water in a spray bottle deters them. we spray our window frames and it stops them coming in to the house! but u got to respray if it rains. got get one of those fancy battery powered electric fly swatters! fun to use!! happy swatting ) Drew and Alan
Valkyrie
My mum has one of those things - dad used to love playing with it!
Chucky Mama
I think that these may be Cluster Flies. It is worth checking out your loft. Spraying around the window frames helps. I hav found that they can also sit in the frames towards the end of the summer too. I have opended the windows before (on one side of the house only) only to get a face full, it is revolting. We have never had them in the loft, only 1 window frame.
Old Speckled Hen
At least they don't bite We have a lot of these CLEGS as there are so many sheep in neighbouring fields. The garden is OK but I have to cover up when I walk the dog or I get bitten. You hardly ever feel them alight, just the bite, but if you do, just before they strike, you'll see them raise their tail ..... all the better to get more power behind that attack, I guess. I react quite badly and the resultant weal itches for a week.
The Dogmother
Phil's folks live on a farm and they regularly have cluster flies in their roof space and need to evacuate them.
