Hi guys! I have recently finished my GCSEs, and now have about 10 weeks holiday. I have already had about a week of holiday, and i am already bored to tears. Jeremy Kyle gets a bit boring after a while! I am also feeling a bit down, and need a way to cheer myself up. My friends all went to Glastonbury, so won't want to meet up for a couple of days, and even when we do all they will talk about is what a great time they had.

 

If anybody has any ideas of fun things to do, i would be very very grateful!

OK, I'm being very boring and old here, but how about voluntary work? One summer holiday during my degree studies I worked for Friends of the Earth - it was a good way of meeting new people, something to put on the CV blah blah. Is there a community farm near you that would welcome help?

I'm in exactly the same position, only just finished A-levels!

 

I have had 2 weeks (to the day) holiday so far, and have 12 weeks until Uni starts...

 

So far I've been out every day with mates, but now have no money left, so today made a lasagne and chocolate brownies

 

Try setting out tasks to do around the house for a couple of days, such as tidying your room, maybe redecorating a room?

 

Do you live near the coast? A day trip to the beach could be in order? Or a nice cycle ride/picnic?

Im in the same situation, I have been doing all the household chores, the washing up, the laundry etc etc, but when that is done, there is nothing else to do! Luckily I won a voucher for a free day's paintball (with some friends), which meant I had something to do on saturday.

THnks for the ideas guys! There is no voluntary work near me that i can see, but i think i will get my mum to drive me around to have a look tonight.

I'm in the same situation, but I can't really afford to do the things I really want to do-train tickets are too expensive.

 

I've been trying to find a job-but to no avail yet, but I've filled in three application forms-that's all the work there is and even Tesco aren't hiring. I've signed up to do Hen parties today, but will be working on my parents to see if they'll let me do even a couple or so.

 

This week I'm busy enough, I've got a rehearsal tomorrow and Creative Arts Evening, Wednesday I've got a music lesson, Thursday it's college Orientation Day and Friday is Prom, but after that nothing.

That's a fab idea Sarah, but what my parents do means that they see all the bad things that go on at Reading Festival and probably wouldn't let me work there.

 

The good news is that I have applied to another place in Reading and it is looking hopeful!!

If you are brave enough, you could try www.couchsurfing.org and go travelling? Lots of students are doing that (and you can make it as cheap as you want!) we met some students over easter as they hitchhiked through our part of France down to Morrocco and they were having a great time seeing places not many tourists get to see. We have a teacher from Amsterdam staying with us in the next few weeks and then another teacher from S America in October (dont know why just teachers want to visit here..)! Its great for us as it gives us a chance to meet intereting people. You just choose where you want to end up staying and ask hosts it you can stay at theirs for a night or two as you make your way to where you want to go. Its as safe as can be as its a verified / trust system. its free, no money involved.

 

Oh, and we have stacks of work that need doing too if you want to keep busy over the summer!

My DD1 volunteered with a Mencap holiday club scheme, she had a brilliant time. She would be assigned to one or two people and generally helped them have a good time. They had organised days out at theme parks, country parks etc. as well and I think all the volunteers had as good a time as the service users.

 

Some churchs also organise school holiday clubs which may be grateful of an extra pair of hands.

 

How about clearing out the loft/cupboards/garage for your parents, you could do a boot sale with all the unwanted items and maybe earn a bit of money.

 

Try to enjoy the break though whatever you do I wish I could swop places with you

How about becoming a dog walker. My friends Son has just started doing this, he put a postcard in the local shop window and now has a couple of dogs to walk each day and makes a little pocket money as well. He is expanding his business to include looking after Rabbits and Guinea Pigs in their own gardens whilst their owners are on holiday.

 

Charity shops are often looking for volunteers to help out.

Has anyone tried the agencies which supply table-waiting staff? My boss's daughter is at uni and is registered with a couple of agencies. She has been trained in silver service waiting and was serving drinkies at a drinks do at Buckingham Palace (for the DofE's birthday) a couple of weeks back.

It's not brilliantly paid but there are perks and she really enjoys it.

 

Some recruitment agencies will also have vacancies for admin staff and office juniors. Failing that, the best thing you can do is to become more computer literate and learn how to touch type - this will increase the range of work that you can take on. I found a friend's teenager a course via Learn Direct and they now do office temping during the uni hols and earn loads of dosh!

I've just got myself a volunteer job at Cardiff Museum, I'm doing it just for something to do, but it's a great way to get experience and meet new people. The other people are using it as a way of getting a foot in the door - you get to look at the internal vacancies.

 

I signed up with http://www.volunteering-wales.net/index.html, have had loads of different opportunities emailed me, the latest one was to do with rescue dogs, they wanted people to lay in the undergrowth for hours while the dogs looked for them.

Talking about dogs... Dogs for the Disabled has a centre near us and they are always looking for walkers and volunteers.

My DD is in same position as just left school... I;ve given her lots of yard jobs to do, spring cleaning stables etc and she has to exercise as has her Army fitness selection test soon but other than that its hard to keep her motivated!

 

How about a chicken house spring clean??

My Uni niece and nephew (one edinburgh one LSE always join a temping agency in the summer) They have always found work somewhere & still time to travel etc

 

My son just turned 18 always works in our local pub and they have taught him bar work(he started just taking meals to tables..and from being shy has seen it all)

 

Local kennels are busy at this time of year too...sometimes have to do menial work to earn some cash

 

Good luck job market is pants but there is work if you keep looking

Its especially hard for a 16 year old, as they can't serve drinks & most places won't let them near a till.

 

Its getting that first foot in the employment door thats the pig of the thing
