Sat Nav Recommendations

Hi CM

I have a bit of an old Tom Tom Go and it has been really reliable we updated it for USA and it cost us another £30 the graphics are good(they are all a bit similar now)...its really easy to update it on line

The only thing I would not get is one that is suctioned onto the window as in ie the heat we have now it kept falling off and eventually broke.. have a good look at the docking stations that will suit your car(I wish I could put mine onto the ie grill on the air vents etc or something more secure) & one that you can put into your ie handbag as well so its not on view or left in the car etc..the one I have is old and bulky so it takes up a bit of room in my bag..

They have come down in price and have a look on line ie at Halfords as you may find a good deal with them. I dont know how anyone manages with out one..although I do ignore mine sometimes as I think I know a better route!

good luck you can pick them up for a cheaper price now

I wish lorry drivers would ignore theirs before they get stuck on our little bridge

I use a map :D but sat navs are good for locating a particular street in an unfamiliar town ... I will admit that. I have an ancient one that sometimes gets the one way streets wrong so perhaps I should update it

 need one so that you come the correct way to my house!!!!???? Or are you planning more chooky expeditions for us

As you know we had a Tom Tom and it was great.....had a Nav Man before and it was pants!

Now we have the Audi the Sat Nav is built in to the dash and it works just fine, it is clever in that when she speaks it turns the stereo down......BUT I found the Tom Tom easier to program and it`s directions clearer!

I had to get a new one for hols and posted a similar thread - all the first replies recommendedGarmin, then the later ones recommended tom tom which is what I'd just broken!

Went for Garmin in the end, got a european maps and traffic update one for £129 which I thought was fantastic value compared to the equivalent in tomtom and it's worked brilliantly. It's got loads more 'places of interest' in it which was invaluable in France when we wanted to pop to a supermarket or go to a park etc etc. Only thing I can't do is tell it a road is closed - not sure whether you can't do that or whether I just haven't worked it out yet but did cause a problem when a bridge was shut and we couldn't get it to navigate round it.

All in all I'd say our new garmin is loads better than the tomtom we had :D

We have a huge old Garmin brick, but it has served us well & apart from her really irritating voice when we go off her planned route is brilliant. It's not linked into any one car, so it goes from Smart to Smart to Espace dependent on who needs to use her & DH usually gets all planned trips loaded up & ready before we leave...I however load in the postcode & go!!!

Would prefer on which was smaller & could hide easily in my handbag, but the screen is very clear on this one & apart from Leeds which is like a rabbit warren with junctions too close for her to keep up with, we've had very few problems.

We have got an external aerial for her in recent years, so it's easier to pick up satellites in built up areas/heavy tree cover/thick cloud cover which can cause problems when in unfamiliar territory! Brill piece of kit now we have a metal car again as it will attach with the internal magnet to the roof........ not so good though when you forget it's posted through the window, & you open the door, ripping it off the roof & smashing on the door  I was not a popular Mrs that day!!!

DH also has a wrist GPS gizmo from Garmin...I can't understand it, but apparently it helps at Shows! Looks like jumbled wool to me :lol:

Love my new tomtom as recommended by omletteers!

I like that it docks onto a USB thingy attached to the laptop so I can programme in the destination the night before. I'm another who doesn't always trust them so it's nice to double check the route it has planned beforehand  Then I know which bits to ignore.

Don't like that it can't pronounce Leicester (see thread above - it don't talk proper) and uses the full number for roads rather the five oh eight, it will say the five hundred and eight :?

Apart from those niggles it's good!
