Sudden death....? succumbed to heat

Recommended Posts

Came home from work today and Viola, my beautiful year-old Blue-laced Wyandotte was lying dead in the run. She was still slightly warm but comb and wattles very blue. She was fine yesterday, out in the garden till late last night and laid her usual smallish egg. The run is shaded and there were 3 drinkers with fresh water, but it was 31deg here today and I wonder if some chooks just can't handle the heat........I was so delighted when she hatched as I'd wanted one for ages.....such a shame :(

So sorry :( she looked beautiful, I guess the heat affects some more than others.. been worried about mine but all we can do is give shade and water.. but could it have been a heart problem with the blue comb?.. either way I am sorry must be hard when its one you've hatched yourself :(

Thanks everyone......I don't normally post when a chook dies....it's usually been older ones that I've seen going downhill, or boys that need to go for the big sleep......and I don't get very upset. Not that I don't love them, just kind of take it in my stride as 'one of those things'.....but it was so unexpected today. I had made the decision not to hatch again so doubt I'll be able to get another Blue-laced Dotte.......not many around these parts!

I am so sorry to hear about Viola. Just yesterday at about ten'o'clock, my chicken Penny passed away. We had taken her to the vets and she was just too hot. We have her iced baths and put the fan on and had all the windows and the backdoor open, and her temperature came down, but she died unexpectedly. We all miss her terribly. She is the first pet I ever lost and I am utterly devastated. I am only 11, and Penny wasn't even a year old.

I'm sorry Pennyforever, it is hard to lose a pet but it is part of the course I'm afraid but tough when you are only 11, Penny was a youngster so its very sad that she has died, but maybe she had a problem anyway, chickens are very good at covering up when they are poorly and can die suddenly, I'm sure you did everything that you could
