Swine flu - omleteers update?

Recommended Posts

I cant believe one of my local doctors has died with this. RIP dr Day. Not my doc, but the doc of loads of mates of mine from the last 20 yrs. Now this seems real. I am asthmatic and my neighbour has cancer, so what exactly is an 'underlying health problem?

oh dear reading this thread makes me wonder if I have Swine Flu. I didnt give it a thought. I went to London 2 weeks ago for a couple of days, then 5 days after that got sore throat and catarry cough, felt I had a temp one evening but not otherwise. Have certainly had a couple of headaches and felt nasious at times, put it down to the cough. Here I am a week further on still feeling wrung out, coughing and wheezing at times. Sometimes I cough quite badly, then dont cough for hours so it cant be anything serious. I do wonder if I havent had or got this flu, should I call someone??

Miffy - I would get a telephone diagnosis from your GPto put your mind at rest - or not :?

Compared to a week or so ago it does seem that a lot more omleteers either have, have had, or know someone who has had it.

I heard on the radio this morning that it appears to be spreading most rapidly in the age group 6 to 14. This has been attributed not solely to the fact that there would be lots of contact amongst that group, but to the fact that after the 1918 outbreak of a similar virus, antibodies giving protection would have been circulating for "some time". Giving some protection to older people.

Now I don't know how long "some time" would be, but I guess it could be anything upto 20 years? Maybe more, maybe less.

My Canadian cuz is coming over - I have warned her about it being in Basingstoke and we may or may not have had it. Half the symptoms I have but some can be put down to age! Just in case she can't get back home for a while - she has to go to work in Germany too. She says:

I guess I’ll have to bring along one of my old SARS masks when I visit! It sounds as though swine flu is getting a lot more attention there than here, even though I believe Canada has had the largest number of cases per capita outside Mexico. Every so often the papers run items bemoaning the fact that Canadians are not paying more attention to swine flu, and saying that we need to be more concerned. I think you’re right … it may hit us hard come winter and the traditional flu season. But for now I don’t know anyone who’s had it, or thinks they’ve had it, or even anyone who’s talking about it.

But then they do have quite a lot of remote areas.

After reading that list from Tiggy we're all wondering........we've all had a sore-throat, cough and temperature but nothing much more than that. I had full blown flu about 30 years ago and still remember what that was like  - this was mild enough to ignore most of the time.

Lauren wa sent home from school on Monday with the symptoms but was OK after paracetamol. She does have a very odd pain threshold though due to other health issues so it's difficult to tell with her......a girl from her class was confirmed as having SF yesterday.......

I don't suppose we'll ever know for sure now.

I am fairly convinced sure myself DH and ES have had it. Didn't really think at the time as it was about 6-8 weeks ago. I am rarely ill but was confined to the sofa feeling nauseus, achy etc etc and drifting in and out of sleep. Very unlike me but as it lasted only about 48 hours I thought it may be food poisoning. However DH is still has a nasty productive cough. Doctors have been useless and have not even mentioned swine flu although he had all bar about 1 of the symptoms! I think that it hit him hardest as he started running before he was completely over it

Our secondary school now says that it has a couple of cases but as no one is testing to confirm anymore who knows how wide spread it really is.

Well, my neice has it (unconfirmed though). I have been achey and feeling rubbish all afternoon, but not too bad. Like Lauren, I have a high pain threshold though, so tend to dismiss these things.

Roise and I both have pretty strong immune systems, so will no doubt fight it off. My folks are pretty fit, but Phil's Mum is diabetic, so I worry about her getting it.

I had proper flu years ago too and was poorly with it.

Something that puzzles me greatly is that poultry workers are one of the small number of named priority groups for swine flu vaccine in Oxfordshire.

Does anyone have a clue why? I thought swine flu and bird flu were quite different.

How odd! - perhaps they are worried that it may mutate?

It may be of course that the vaccine works for both, and they can kill two birds (pardon the expression) with one stone.

I am particularly interested because I took part in the bird flu vaccine trials two years ago, and it would be useful to know if I am now safe from swine flu as well.

Alternatively, if the vaccine is different, I wonder if with eleven hens I can persuade them that I am a poultry worker?

We have all had the sore throat and cough thing, which it would be interesting to know whether or not it is another virus doing the rounds or swine flu.

We have my BIL & SIL and baby nephew coming for a couple of days on their way to a holiday in Cornwall. We have warned them about this, but we are all well now apart from residual coughs. They are fine about it saying that they can't keep Henry away from other people for the next few months, but it does worry me because he is still very small.

Hubby has just been confirmed. He had a temp of 39.1C this morning, and aches all over :(

Mine was higher than that and I ached and had chills but I was told if I hadnt got the sore throat/cough thing it wasnt swine flu :?:?

Maybe if I lived somewhere else I would have had it :roll:
