im not a great lover of cats i'm afraid, we did use to get at least 3 different cats frequenting my garden, usually after the birds feeding from my bird table and hangers,

this worried me slightly when we decided to get chickens although i have read somewhere that they can hold there own against a cat,

anyway we got our eglu and chickens and on the 1st day i saw a cat stalking around the edge of the run very interested in our new arrivals, the girls didnt seem too bothered at all,

we have now had them 4 weeks and i havent seen a cat since that 1st day , wierd or what :?

Hello Rufurooster

Will you change your name now to Rufuchick :)

Our cats who have had the freedom to roam our garden ( & neighbours!!) for many years are almost -at times - like hesitant guests now - our chooks rule the roost & one even chased the cats. Oddly the cats are quite territorial towards the chickens & do behave oddly if they can smell a different smell on the lawn, they lie at the bottom of the garden, protecting the boundary as if looking out for the chickens (not that the chickens are at all gracious or grateful) So I would say definitely yes they can hold their own against some cats - suppose the significant word is SOME.

I was worried about my cat... she's a real hunter always catching mice and small birds and chasing pigeons and squirrels... i thought she;d go for the chickens, defo!

But she hasn't been anywhere near them... when I carried her over to them in their run she just jumped out of my arms and run the other way!

Marcie, one of our new cats will go for the chickens. Marley is chilling out a bit more with them, but I still wouldn't trust him. He went for them every time their heads were through the chicken wire.

Our previous cat used to let them preen him (see avatar)

It's harder if they're not your own cats, as you won't know their capability.

One of my cats is exactly the same....generally brings us regular "presents" of birds/mice/voles :vom: ..some of them are even live when she brings them...thinks nothing of bringing me the gift of a live mouse to scurry round my kitchen

She is absolutely petrified of the girls - runs past the run....the only time she has been close to one was when the Bluebelle snuck up behind her and pecked her on the nose....

We've just moved to a new place having rehomed our chickens for the duration (all the ungrateful wotsits have forgotten us already!)

It's a bit of a culture shock as we have not had neighbours for the last 7 years and are now in a cluster of 8 farm cottages. There are at least 4 outdoor cats around, and at least 2 come into our garden. I have tried to tell OH (who hates cats) that when we get chickens again they will probably see the cats off, but he doesn't believe me - I will have to show him this thread! At least there are no loose dogs about.

Since having the birds last year, the neighbour's cats seem to give our garden a wide berth until the middle of the night when fights happen. But yesterday a new one that I have only seen this week pounced on one of our girls. There was a lot of squawking as the cat tried to get her back and wing, but DD scared it away before any harm had been done apart from the shock - which she is fine and happily honking and scoffing for the rest of the day - I checked for damage but there wasn't any and she is still OK today. The other girls just watched and Squirt did all the honking as she was the target. Needless to say we weren't very happy and we have no idea where the animal comes from.

Our cat Charlie thought that he'd 'ave a go' when we first got them - well did he get a suprise as they all turned on him and chased him!!!!! He tried a couple of times after that but the girls always had the upper hand so he's given up now.

I tell you what is interesting though - since we've had the girls we don't get the heron visiting anymore - as soon as it tries to land the girls go berserk and chase it away - quite funny to watch :lol:

we have loads of cats in the area :D

many of them see our run as a great "wide screen tv" but if the chickens are out there are no cats at all

even the big bruiser up the road wont take on a chicken :D

one of our neighbours was worried that her cats would attack the chickens - I told her that I was more worried about the chickens attacking her cat

Our neighbours got 2 lovely little black and white kittens. Gorgeous tiny little things! And boy were they intrigued by the chickens!

They used to sit on the fence and watch the chickens for hours. They would walk along the fence on all three sides of the garden, to get a better view, dodging the bushes and roses on the fence.

Occasionally, they would start to come down the fence, then panic, and clamber back up to the top again - was so funny to watch!! Chickens weren't bothered at all by them!

After several weeks, one slowly lost interest, and then a few week later again the 2nd one did. Never saw them actually come into the garden, but was so funny watching them watching the chickens!!:lol:

Our cockerel has developed a special call for our cat Poppy, which he uses if he even hears her bell, let alone sees her. It's a very bad tempered chatter which sounds like

" What! you here again- I told you I'd peck your eyes out if you bother the mrs's!".

She brought it on herself though by threatening to pounce on them when they were little and in the run.

Other cats don't even venture in the garden, although from time to time, I see scared faces peering over the fence at the pterodactyls that Poppy has told them about.

Looks like i spoke too soon  cat in the garden 3 days running, early morning, same one 1st 2 days then another this morning, it has alerted me to a hole in the fencing at the bottom of the garden though, very surprised none of the girls had found it and escaped
