Staffordmum
I've had to change since moving to the farm - I'm hyperventilating here, just thinking about it..... I have learned to live with a certain level of grime, mud and straw/hay on the floors and dust and spiders elsewhere. I keep the bathrooms and kitchen clean. I have to agree Since our "escape to the country" I have learned to stop fighting it! - the conservatory is teaming with spiders (they keep they flies down, don't they?) and wood lice ... I do vacuum daily - since being unemployed. Apart from that, the three of us seem to walk the gdn into the hse - with very little effort We invested in those Turtle mats that can be machine washed. Needless to say I need two - one in the wash and one on the floor ... Steve does the ironing (ex services) and he's a whizz at "hiding" things when we are expecting visitors Rgds, Pat & Steve

Space Chick
And my husband wonders what I do with my time The best way to show them how much you do is to stop doing it for a few days. You have hit the nail on the head there. I have been ill with the flu for the last week, so have done no housework at all and OH is shocked how the house is in such a state We've run out of clean towels, tea towels, the floor is filthy, the tables are a mess, but with fly lady I just to a little bit every day and its stays "presentable". Its going to take me a couple of weeks to get it back on track once I'm well again I think Well, I would like to say thanks debsl, cos although i've only had a quick look at flylady, i really need something to make me clean this mess up, and to have something, anything that will help is fine by me. Ain't Nobody Here
I often think OH wonders if I spend all day on the forum ( ) but just to prove I haven't, today I have, in no particular order: walked Riley (very short walk as he's still very wobbly) weeded all the raised beds picked peas, sugar snap peas, carrots, cabbage dug over the compost bins and added coffee grounds and compost activator put load of washing in phoned Tesco Insurance re Riley's accident written letter to vets enclosing insurance claim nagged YS to phone Oxfam to arrange some hours to work for DofE (3 times ) stripped border off one wall in YS's room (nightmare so tried painting over another bit to see if that would do) ordered some wine from Laithwaites made lunch for YS (ES made his own ) sent loads of texts arranging lunch with one group of friends and coffee with another quite a lazy day, really I think I should keep a diary and present it to OH daily . Yorkshire Pudding
good idea, but the list should include treats as well as tasks! Today I have to: get the judo suits dry almost there but will need airing indoors - they're so thick they take days to dry. Hooverall downstairs & upstairs is done thanks to roomba but he can't do stairs and the dyson is kaput get a few hours of work done on the timetabling for schoolstill at it... make a nice pud for teatimestill thinking - we have a melon very ripe tat needs using up so may opt for that read my book for half an hour not yet... Keep DS2's noisy friend at an acceptable volume actually he's been bearable - apart from the crisps all over my sofa And dropped off the car for repair (taking OH to work on the way), phoned the insurance company, make lunch, planned tea, put away the dry laundry, bleached the sink and cleaned the loos and handbasins. Not an unproductive day, all in all... edited to add - it still looks like a mess though! Oh well...

Cinnamon
Gosh, all those little things add up don't they? I am not going to even think about all the small tidies I have done while wandering around the house today And the paperwork too - just general 'keeping the family running' stuff Today I have booked hair appointments, sent flowers to MIL for her birthday, spoke to the accountant 3 times & got a chipped windscreen fixed too. AND I managed to fit a trip to Tesco in Forgot to mention that the weekend is also towel & bedding wash, & all the removable bits from the oven into the dishwasher, both of which then get a good ole clean too. jlo
I know that this is an old one but it makes me smile! Today I Didn’t Do It One afternoon a man came home from work to find total mayhem in his house. His three children were outside - still in their pajamas - playing in the mud with empty food boxes and wrappers strewn all around the front yard. The door of his wife's car was open, as was the front door to the house. Proceeding into the entry, he found an even bigger mess - the lamp had been knocked over, and the throw rug was wadded against one wall. In the front room the TV was loudly blaring a cartoon channel, and the family room was strewn with toys and various items of clothing. In the kitchen dishes filled the sink, breakfast food was spilled on the counter, dog food was spilled on the floor, a broken glass lay under the table, and a small pile of sand was spread by the back door. He quickly headed up the stairs, stepping over toys and more piles of clothes, looking for his wife. He was worried that she may be ill or that something serious had happened. He found her lounging in the bedroom, still curled in the bed in her pajamas and thoroughly engrossed in reading a good book. She looked up at him, smiled, and asked how his day went. He looked at her bewildered and asked, "What happened here today?" She smiled again and answered, "You know, every day when you come home from work, you ask me what in the world did I do today?" "Yes?!" was his incredulous reply. She answered, "Well, today I didn't do it."

Helly Welly
I follow flylady too. I had a week off last week while DD was away as i wanted to do some extra studying but because i had thoroughly decluttered as per flylady's instructions, nothing got in too much of a mess. I hoovered and cleanend he bathroom before she came home and the house looked fine. This week i'm concentrating on the kitchen. The house gets a once-over once a week which i'm doing tomorrow. I'll hoover, dust, empty the bins, change the bedlinen and clean the mirrors. This only takes an hour all in so it fits in easy. Flylady did take a bit of work to start with, but only in organising it. Taking the small steps that are advocated means that once you get going, it's easy. And i was able to miss a week without the house getting in a state. Stick with it if you can, it's worth it.
jenuk99
I am enjoying this thread as my house usually gets a blitz every so often but then gets neglected until the next time. I have spent 2 hours reading flylady and now have a shiny sink and am off to do the bathroom as well now you have motivated me! jlo
I'm really sorry guys but this is one time when I won't be following the Omlet trend. I have had a look at FlyLady and, although I have not gone right through it, the bits that I have seen were so patronising that I just couldn't go on any further. My mum always says, do a room at a time so that you can feel that you have achieved something and that's what I try and do. Like others on here, the blitz comes when people come to visit and, if they are not likely to go upstairs, the blitz stops on the ground floor! AJuff
I'm going to give Flylady a try and see how it works! I generally don't like things that are too Americanised but we'll see. Is there an English alternative I wonder or will Omlet provide that too?

Ain't Nobody Here
Fortunately, I'm off the hook with this Flylady stuff - my sink is white and no amount of cleaning will make it shiny. So I can't possibly do it .
Valkyrie
Well having checked Flylady, firstly I cannot abide wearing shoes in the house - not even slippers - I have to be a bit of a hippy. Secondly when I make a nice neat pile of stuff I then have to unpile it to find bits. If I open a cupboard it will take more than 15 minutes to empty it let alone shove it back in! Obviously Flylady doesn't have an eager mini chef that doesn't like clearing up after her. Nor does Flylady have a mum that puts things away in the wrong drawers. I couldn't find my oven gloves for ages. When I clean something and move to the next area, gremlins come and dirty the bit I have done, drop toast crumbs all over the floor, tea stains over the granite (luckily I was very clever and opted for one that doesn't show tea stains hahaha). But then someone gets sugar everywhere - amazing instead of putting the teaspoon of sugar in their tea, it gets sprinkled. Also I have a tray for putting cups on so that tea stains just go on the tray. What tray? Arggghhhhhh! That sort of goes with "what's a dishwasher?" That's when plates trays knives with butter all over them (including the handle???!!!!) spoons are just dropped where they were last used. Oh and I have a white sink too - Domestos and Limelight do well there. And if I am really lucky I can get that wonderful aroma of the swimming baths so it feels like I have been at the poolside. Just kidding.
xScrunchee
Dust if you must Dust if you must but wouldn't it be better To paint a picture or write a letter Bake a cake or plant a seed. Ponder the difference between want and need. Dust if you must but there's not much time, With rivers to swim and mountains to climb! Music to hear and books to read, Friends to cherish and life to lead. Dust if you must but the world's out there With the sun in your eyes, the wind in your hair, A flutter of snow, a shower of rain. This day will not come around again. Dust if you must but bear in mind, Old age will come and it's not kind. And when you go and go you must, You, yourself, will make more dust. Dust if you must but listen to this, It's caring not cleaning that brings upon bliss. Remember, a house becomes a home when you can write "I love you" on the furniture...
