rachel19
Was browsing the livefoods website for a christmas mealworm treat for the girls and decided to buy a tub of extra large locusts.........i've seen their hunting instincts with flies and stag beetles so thought they might enjoy chasing after big bugs. Has anyone else tried their chooks on locusts or crickets or anything?

Paola
I went to a new pet shop today and they stock them. Do let us know how you get on with them Rachel
The Dogmother
I guess it all depends on whether the chooks can move fast enough to catch the locusts. Could be good sport I've never liked locusts since the ones in our biology lab at school escaped one year and rampaged through the classroom

The Dogmother
It was vile I love grass hoppers, but locusts are just too big and ghastly.
Eggtastic
Mine love crickets - practically obsessed. We actually bought them for the lizards, but faffing around with the crikets outside (you have to dusted the crikets with nutrients for the lizards) the escapees were quickely gobbled up by the girls. Now there's no peace if they acn see the cricket jar... p.s. if you get the chirping type (they can also come in silent) over summer next year and they do escape from the chickens, it'll just like being on holiday in the med. (criket chorus by the patio!). Nearly worth getting a box and letting them loose for that alone!

The Dogmother
Some one must've done that near us this summer - there were loads of chirping crickets. Lesley's fields were hopping with grasshoppers too
rachel19
Well the girls had he locusts yesterday and weren't all that impressed! Quite a lot of weird looks and running past pretending not to have seen them! Really brave my chickens!!! Anyway, Edna eventually took the plunge and picked one up and bashed it and reluctantly ate it......the others followed but weren't all that impressed i dont think. They much prefer wax worms and the giant mealworms which are huge! Plus my mum wont let me get any more locusts because she got too attached to them as they were 'cute' Anywho - on the whole worth a try but prob not worth the hassel......the chooks much prefer things that dont fight back! kannie
Help! I've just secured some crickets from freecycle! Aparently its half a tube of medium sized black crickets! I have no idea how many this is! Will they eat them all in one go, or will I have to store them? If so, do I have to feed them? How bizarre! I do hope the chooks like them! If not, will they damage the garden, or survive the cold weather? I'd love cicada type sounds in the garden over summer! Not sure if I fancy my fridge chirruping though! rachel19
Ours had 8 locusts between the 6 of them.............once they realised they were actually a food souce they ate them. You may just want to pick out a couple so that your chickens figure out what they are and then i'm sure they'll go mad for them. The locusts i got were huuuuge and i think the girls were a bit scared.
One Man Banned
I thought about this the other day when I went to our local pet shop and they had one tub of tiny mealworms left..they didn't last long with the Laydees! (very nearly bought a gorgeous little black rabbit too but thought better of it!) Joe's brother keeps crickets as he feeds them to their pet tarantula "Angelica" - whom I avoid like mad! Molly finds them terribly intriguing and sits and watches them.....might buy a tub and see what the girls think! A xx
Cinnamon
I have never thought of feeding them live stuff before, apart from the maggotts they had for sour crop. Where do you buy them from
One Man Banned
try your local pet shop - i haven't seen anything like this in places like Pets at Home but our small independent shop stocks all manner of things. A xx
rachel19
try www.livefood.co.uk They're really good and sell all sorts of live stuff with really quick delivery too!
The Dogmother
Wiggly wigglers are good too, they even do a sort of staged delivery (can't remember what they call it), where you can put in an order for a pot of live worms to be delivered each week.
