Introducing our latest additions (ex batts). PHOTO

Recommended Posts

My lovely OH went and collected 3 new girls from BHWT in Haslingden this afternoon - we were going to get just 2, however as they will be living in their own eglu, decided literally 5 mins before leaving to have 3 if there were any spare.

We were surprised at how well feathered they are and moving better than when we got our last ex batts :D - they still have very pale combs and haunted eyes though :(

They have even put themselves to bed by themselves - clever girls!

Primrose in the foreground, then Buttercup, and Daffodil in the background

We are defintely & absolutely full up now! :D

You are very lucky getting such feathery girls, they are beauties already rather than sad ovenreadies who blossom into beauties :anxious:

That sad, haunted look is difficult to describe to anyone who hasn't got/had batties...and the most amazing thing to realise they no longer have it a few weeks or months down the line....*can't find a smiley to fit the way I feel right now* :anxious:

Lovely names, would fit in with my flock beautifully

It is surprising isn't it how wel feathered. Did OH see any of the others, sometimes there can be HUGE variations in feathering.

Lucky girls all covered & snug too!

There was only about 20 out when he got there (presumably they only get a few out of the crates at a time) and most of them weren't too bad, though he did say that a couple of bottoms were red raw, and they put them to one side.

We've had one large egg already this morning and they're eating like there's no tomorrow. :D

When OH got back, at first, he did actually say should we have ones that were worse off, I think he felt a bit guilty that they were so feathered - however I don't think it matters, and that we should be pleased that they're not so bad and that they have still come out of a cage no matter their condition and we both agreed they just need a lovely retirement. :D

oh absoloutly, they have still been living in hell, often they give the tattyer ones to the newbies because they feel they will be fussed over and spoilt.(pros and cons there having been that newbie once :(:D )

We had no choice really, the ladies scooped up the chooks nearest & handed them over...I did draw the line at a bully though, "this one is picking on the others, would you be ok with her........." err  no thank as you've given me the option  The extended eglu run is not a great place to put 3 hens and a bully, so I took the best route for my girls :anxious: I met a lady last week who was involved in our rescue & she said she'd never seen such a sorry bunch as ours, they were the worst condition she'd seen in any rescue she'd done :(
