docsquid
I like the comment in response to the assertion that hobby farmers might not treat chickens as a professional farmer would - that hens kept as pets are kept a whole lot more humanely than the battery hens kept by professional farmers! Our little chickens seem to be pretty spoiled, at any rate!
Space Chick
I know!! I have emailed a letter to the Times, doubt it will be published though
laurmurf
Thanks for pointing this one out, Space Chick, I've left my comments online.... Tony Shore better not diss omleteers, he's met his match and more! (btw - this is my 1,000 post! Hurrah! even if not in the same league as mostin or Redwing who joined about the same time - I'm very proud! )

Lavenders_Blue
Hmm, I wonder if Tony Shore has ever seen a rehabilitated ex-battery hen, as I would have thought that would be proof enough that domestic poultry keepers don't and shouldn't treat their hens in the same way as commercial poultry farmers. But hooray for 16,000 eglus!
welovemarmite
My chickens are so pampered they are looked after better than farm chickens. And certainly loved as much as my cats. People at work think i am loopy as i keep talking about my chickens....
Reikiranf
When I had to take Yum Yum to the vet because she hurt her leg The vet said that she was lovely and obviously used to being handled and he said it was great that people were getting chickens as pets as they are lovely creatures and have every right to be pampered as much as cats and dogs We don't look after our hens the same as professional farmers do, because our girls are pets and we love them and if chicken keeping was our business I'm pretty sure that most omleteers would be bankrupt
Valkyrie
Tony Shore, an enforcement officer at Staffordshire County Council, said: “There is definitely a fashion for hobby farming but we cannot be sure owners behave in the same way as a professional farmer. It’s not just the risk of disease but people have to know about welfare of hens. There is also a food safety issue.” What a plonker. I wonder if Mr Bernard Matthews comes under hobby farmer or professional - seeing as he's the only one that has had diseases here and his birds are cooped up indoors. Plus what will Defra do with all those naughty wild birds spreading the diseases to our babies. Makes you want to go GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! Lavenders_Blue
if chicken keeping was our business I'm pretty sure that most omleteers would be bankrupt I don't have an eglu but I would think my set up costs were pretty similar to an eglu-owner's. Yes I would be bankrupt if I were doing this as a business. I reckon I am working on a cost of approx £10 an egg at the moment
Eggquisite
Yes well having read that article I feel I could have a good old rant - still I'm going to take a few death breaths instead mmmmmm Amazing figures being reported by Omlet - well done to them (Wished I'd had the idea )
patsylabrador
Whilst cleaning out the still fresh smelling coop this afternoon, I discussed this with my chickens and they agreed with koojie - 'what a plonker that government official is', they seemed to say. chick wiggle
Well Said Space Chick! I agree with Koojie - 'what a plonker!' I cant see 'Mr Farmer' Chopping up, boiling and adding cabbage, brussel sprouts and carrots to their warmed up pellets and poultry spice, with a lovely mealworm garnish, for supper, which is what my girls had tonight! I would hate to be compared to 'proffesional' chicken farmers
