Interesting article in the Times!( 4.12.09)

I like the comment in response to the assertion that hobby farmers might not treat chickens as a professional farmer would - that hens kept as pets are kept a whole lot more humanely than the battery hens kept by professional farmers!

Our little chickens seem to be pretty spoiled, at any rate!

Thanks for pointing this one out, Space Chick, I've left my comments online.... Tony Shore better not diss omleteers, he's met his match and more!

(btw - this is my 1,000 post! Hurrah! even if not in the same league as mostin or Redwing who joined about the same time - I'm very proud!:lol: )

When I had to take Yum Yum to the vet because she hurt her leg :( The vet said that she was lovely and obviously used to being handled and he said it was great that people were getting chickens as pets as they are lovely creatures and have every right to be pampered as much as cats and dogs

We don't look after our hens the same as professional farmers do, because our girls are pets and we love them and if chicken keeping was our business I'm pretty sure that most omleteers would be bankrupt

Tony Shore, an enforcement officer at Staffordshire County Council, said: “There is definitely a fashion for hobby farming but we cannot be sure owners behave in the same way as a professional farmer. It’s not just the risk of disease but people have to know about welfare of hens. There is also a food safety issue.”

What a plonker. I wonder if Mr Bernard Matthews comes under hobby farmer or professional - seeing as he's the only one that has had diseases here and his birds are cooped up indoors. Plus what will Defra do with all those naughty wild birds spreading the diseases to our babies. Makes you want to go GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

 Well Said Space Chick!

I agree with Koojie - 'what a plonker!'

I cant see 'Mr Farmer' Chopping up, boiling and adding cabbage, brussel sprouts and carrots to their warmed up pellets and poultry spice, with a lovely mealworm garnish, for supper, which is what my girls had tonight!

I would hate to be compared to 'proffesional' chicken farmers
