Christmas films at the cinema

Recommended Posts

We went to see A Christmas Carol yesterday. The 3D was brilliant - really poppy-outy, if the script a little hokey. Jim Carrey plays half the roles. Has anyone else seen it? If you're thinking of a kids treat, be warned that some of the ghosty stuff is quite full on and scary.

We're really really looking forward to Where The Wild Things Are now. The trailer looks breathtaking. :D

What's on your Christmas cinema experience wishlist?

We saw A Christmas Carol last week and really enjoyed it. We also saw it in 3D and during the flying bits it made me feel quite giddy!! The glasses were really good as well as because I wear glasses already sometimes the 3D ones don't sit properly but they were really good. My mum came with us to see it because she was going on a Christmas Carol walk around London with the U3A.

There were 2 kids under about 4 in front of us and they got a bit scared at some bits of it.

We're going to see 2012 on Saturday, YS chose that film to go to with his friends as his birthday treat (after go-karting  ). Not exactly christmassy I'm guessing. :?

I love Christmas films. :D

Of course! I was thinking it was The Flaming Lips. Such a big soul-swelling song isn't it? Love love love it.

Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs did a lot of the soundtrack. Should be interesting.

I'm so glad Maurice Sendak is such a curmudgeon. There are some really cute Disney CGI animation trials of WTWTA on youtube, but Spike Jones looks like he's got it's soul riproaring out of the twee cage and is on Sendak's level.

I am so excited. :dance::dance:

I'll try again BarbaraJ :D !

Maurice Sendak wrote Where The Wild Things Are (WTWTA). He is known for being a no-nonsense individual who thinks kids today are mollycoddled. He is very pro exposing kids to fears and dangers and not wrapping them up in Disney-fied cotton wool. I like his vim and curmudgeonly attitude. I think he's right.

Disney owned the rights to WTWTA for years, and trialled some very early computer generated image (CGI) effects to have a go at making some characterisation for the film:

They are cute, but lack the scary wildness of the new film:

The Disney vibe for WTWTA was cute and twee. The new film is not. I think the director of the new film, Spike Jonze, has got the sentiment of the original book just right.

I am very excited about seeing it.

Does that help?

edit: added 'vim' as I had used a word the censor robot thinks is naughty, which means (or at least used to mean!) vim or mettle.

I must say we all fancy seeing Sherlock (me because I just love Robert Downey Jnr :D ) but it looks quite good - unless they've shown all the best bits

Where the Wild things.... seems to have been advertised for years, I don't think I've ever known a film to be advertised so far in advance. I must admit that I don't think we'll be seeing it.

Avatar is a real visual treat, streets ahead of the last 3D animation I saw which was beowulf.

It has a very simple plot with the usual stereotypic hero, heroine, bad guy, the odd martyr, scientist, number cruncher and a happy ending.

The soundtrack is a bit over sentimental and intrusive at times but the action had me on the edge of my seat plenty of times.

If this is ever on an Imax screen anywhere it would be spectacular :D:D

Yes definitely worth seeing
