Crescent Moon and Venus [1 pic]

Yes, as Nicola says, you can get a wireless remote that will do the shutter release instead.

I've just been outside freezing my nose off trying to find Saturn. It took me a while, but I got there. I took probably the worst photo of Saturn ever taken by anyone, anywhere.... but hey, it's Saturn! :D

This was handheld to a cheapy Russian telescope.

:oops::oops::oops:

You are all too kind. The actual view was really sharp, but it moves so fast that when it comes to photographing it, it's a challenge to get something that isn't blurred - at least with a non-driven telescope.

Annie - I have a Tal-1. However, if I was starting again from scratch, I wouldn't get this telescope. It is very good, but the mount is quite hefty and I continually fight with it to get what I want it to do. The Celestron 102SLT is quite highly thought of - it's £299 and includes auto-align and GOTO software. Basically, you point it to three bright objects in the sky and from this it works out where it is. Then you can select objects from a menu and it will automatically swivel round and go to them. Some say it's cheating, but I am sorely tempted to get one of these myself!! Another good quality starter scope is a Skywatcher Skyhawk 1145PM @ £149. This doesn't have autoalign software or GOTO capability - you have to find the objects yourself, but it is good quality and includes a motor drive, so once you have found the object, you can engage the motor and it will track it.

WOWEE Graham. I'm amazed at your photo of Saturn. It's brilliant. I'd love to able to see that through a telescope. I don't think my bins would do it somehow! Alright for robin watching......

My neighbour came round last night with his telescope and we watched venus from my back garden. It's amazing to see it with your own eyes. I was dead chuffed. :D

Annie, that technical script from Grd looks bewildering. It makes no sense to me :?

Thank you! :D Honestly though - it could have been so much better. If it stays clear, I'll have another go tonight.

Jen Jen: I usually rely on "Sky at Night" Magazine for tip offs on the coming month's events. But there is a fantastic piece of free software called Stellarium that produces a real-time image of the night sky relative to your longitude/latitude. This really helps when it comes to locating objects. http://www.stellarium.org

Thanks for that Graham! 8) We use that free software. If you know your long / lat, its great. We sit out in the garden in the summer, OH has the laptop fired up and we can find out what we're looking at! Off to hunt for telescopes now......

Thanks also for the pics: I'm "doing" the Earth in space with the children in my class at present, and was able to show them the picture of Venus and tell them where to look: They came in today haveing seen it and were SO excited! 8)
