I will try again. I tried to put things on Flickr but it didn't like me (my PC is dying on me!) This is supposed to show the album rather than the first photo but if it doesn't work I will try Flickr again.

I just get the feeling that the Emiratis(sp??) are trying too hard. They want to have the biggest and best of everything and, for some reason, it just doesn't quite work. The Dubai Mall has 1200 shops but it is just so huge that you don't actually have the time to go into any of them so I don't know how long it will last.

The Burj Dubai (or Khalifi as it has now been called) is the tallest building in the world but is in danger of being the biggest white elephant around,

There are amazing buildings alongside buildings that are half built; really wealthy people alongside people on less than the minimum wage. The whole place is spread across such a huge area that you can't really get to grips with where you are. Oh, and the traffic is horrendous - no way would I dare to drive there.

We saw terrible driving on an minute by minute basis. On one occasion, we were in a taxi that made a very innocuous cut into a line of traffic, he was immediately hauled over by a traffic cop and fined 500 dirham (about £90 - more than he would actually take in one or probably two days)

Whenever I go to a different country I like to make the effort to speak at least a few words of the language but there was little point in doing it over there as there are only about 16% of inhabitants who speak Arabic and English is the common language.

On New Years Day we decided to go skiing to try and condition ourselves to the weather that we knew was waiting for us back home!! Just as well :?

Oh wow Jlo! Thank you, now I can see all the pics, what a lovely family you have. The pictures are fantastic, it looks like a spectacular place. i love the desert photos and that sunset looks gorgeous! as do those puddings

There is certainly some striking looking buildings.

It does look the sort of place you want to go and see, but maybe only once?

A shopping mall with 1200 shops? ahhhhh (big sigh) my idea of heaven!

I thought that 1200 shops would be my idea of heaven but I was just overwhelmed!

The puddings were rather lush. We were at the gala dinner on New Year's Eve on the beach in front of the Burj al Arab hotel. That was an experience but the amount of food that was provided was, quite frankly, obscene! The fireworks were spectacular though.

In the desert we were in a 4x4 with a boy racer who kept skidding to get the sand to fly up. It was like being on a huge roller coaster:- fine for the first couple of minutes but then I felt decidedly queasy :vom:

Beautiful! 8)

We stayed at The Hilton in Abu Dhabi last year - very similar. We loved it & are wanting to return one year for a holiday. We loved the lushness & grandness of it all. We felt rather spoilt & everything it just so unique & exquisite. The finishing touches are fabulous & the service we got was amazing.
