Not looking good for Ruby :( SAD UPDATE

Recommended Posts

I have posted a couple of times re Ruby our rescue dog, approx 10, whom we have had for nearly two years.

She isn't getting any better, in fact much worse over the last few weeks, she has only a little appetite and has lost weight, her back legs keep giving way and has little mobility. She stays in her bed most of the day and doesn't even looked pleased to see us anymore.

We rang the vets about 10 days ago, as we didn't want to keep taking her as she doesn't like going and I think at the moment would traumatise her to see if this was the end for her. The vet was very understanding and her suggestion was to make an extended appointment and to bring her in in her bed, then after she had checked her over, if it was the right thing to do, then she would put her to sleep.

The appointment was made, however because of the weather conditions we cancelled.... but the new appointment is Tuesday morning. Having had the conversation with the vet has made things more real, but also given us and the children a little time to accept what I think is the inevitable.

She has never been a lively dog, but she doesn't do anything 'doggy' anymore and it is really sad to watch her being so sad.

....so this may be our last weekend wih her. :(

We've been through this with our 15 year old GSD - and it's an agonising decision.

I don't know if this is an option for you, but our vet came out to Calli at home as we thought it would be too stressful for her to take her there.

In fact, a vet and a nurse came. They phoned as they left the surgery so we knew they were on the way. She lay on the rug in front of the fire with her teddy. They'd brought a dog bed with them so we put her in their afterwards and they took her away for us.

It was as good as something like that can be. It was £117 but worth every penny.

Whatever happens you'll be doing the right thing.

Well, Ruby seems to have had a reprieve. :D

After tempting her with anything and everything to eat for the last couple of weeks - the last day or so has started to work and inturn she seems to be wanting to make an effort....we're not out of the woods yet, however she actually had a little mooch around the downstairs today and her back legs seems to be holding up slightly more, so maybe, just maybe these are greenshooots of recovery

....and the important thing is we have cancelled the vets appointment. :D
