ChrisEllis
Hi, I just bought a nice wooden bird feeder with two platforms a little flower shrub part at the bototm and a solar light, we never have a rat problem where we live as we have two cats and our next door neighbours keep stray cats so any rats that come out are taken down - therefore i keep their food out overnight if there is a bit left as i know it wont attract anything. Anyway, I amm apparentely not allowed to put nthe bird feeder in or near the chicken run as the birds (which already come ovr anyway as they like the food that maybe scattered by teh chickens) will carry diseases and pass diseases onto the chickens? Is this right or wrong? i never thought of a blue tit or robin to pass a disease to a chicken? Is it safe enough to put a bird feeder in their run - bare in mind this run is over 100 m2 so its not a space issue
tom123
I wouldn't advise it
Eggasperated
My bird feeder is away from the hens run as I thought wild birds could spread disease but I get a lot of pheasants in the garden and these go right up to the run and peer in to see what the hens have got. ChrisEllis
well seeing as i have a pretty open run in the middle of rural land next to a forest im pretty safe with birds on a bird table seeing as i get all sorts left right and center anyway? Lewis
Wild birds can pass on disease to poultry. I wouldn't put it in there as not only could they pass something to the chickens, the chickens could also start getting on it eating the food/knocking it over so it wouldn't benefit the wild birds then Thats why if there was ever a scare and you were in the control zone, chickens have to be kept in a covered run ... I'm pretty sure covered WIR's are fine when I checked last time
Egluntyne
I would locate it away from the chickens.
Redwing
I would too, apart from the disease risk there is a risk of dropped food becoming mouldy which can cause all sorts of nasties if eaten by a chook
