chickencam
I have a Philips one which OH bought me for Christmas about 3 years ago. The only problem with mine is that it doesn't take energy saving lightbulbs and finding bulbs for it was a real pain. I found some through a SAD website. The newer ones do take energy savers though. My Philips developed a fault after I tried an energy saving lightbulb in it, but they still replaced it for me although through my local agent it took nearly a month. During this time I bought the cheapest of the Lumie clocks, because I couldn't bare the thought of not waking up with the light. I realy didn't like it and sold it on as soon as my Philips came back. The Lumie had a loud beeping alarm and the light wasn't bright enough to make me feel in any way awake. The Philips has a gentle 'plip, plip' alarm that gets slowly louder. I usually wake just with the light and have 10 minutes to come to before the alarm starts.
bluekarin
OH has threatened to buy me one of these http://www.iwantoneofthose.com/lifestyle-home/clocky-run-away-alarm-clock/index.html as I am a big fan of the snooze button. I spose if I have to hunt the clock out then i might stay up ......might just go back to bed though I'm wondering if the Clocky from IWOOT would work for my son...........or would he be even more grumpy as he wouldn't be able to hit the 'snooze' button Maybe one of these would help your son Lesley http://www.crazyaboutgadgets.com/product/?Hanging-Alarm-Clock- I'm having problems getting up in the morning. Mainly because I don't get to bed early enough, but I am waking up at around 3am about 3 times a week, thinking I have pressed the snooze button on my alarm and waiting for the 4 minutes before it's due to go off again. Except I wait and wait and nothing, until I finally check, and like I say, 3am I have in the past, as this used to happen, but not this frequently, got up and almost got the kids up
Rhapsody
The Philips has a gentle 'plip, plip' alarm that gets slowly louder. I usually wake just with the light and have 10 minutes to come to before the alarm starts. Mine has the Dawn Chorus birdsong option I have never liked an alarm clock so much ETA they are half price at Amazon at the moment
Lesley
I don't think birdsong would wake my son - he sleeps with the window and curtains open and still can't get up Maybe one of these would help your son Lesley http://www.crazyaboutgadgets.com/product/?Hanging-Alarm-Clock- I was thinking more along the lines of Heath Robinson - big hammer - 20lb weight
Lesley
I've just made him come and look and he says he's after the Japanese system that attaches to your big toe and electrocutes you to wake you up - well, an electric shock anyway He has heard of it.........just can't find one! Sorry for derailing the thread but we're desperate!! He lives in an annexe to my daughter's house and the alarms he does use drive them mad - he just doesn't hear them. The Dogmother
could be because he's a smoker - I have read that they sleep deeper, one of the reasons why they don't recommend that sleepers take their baby into their bed with them. You need to find him a new woman, Lesley - one who wakes up early!
PurpleTree
This watch sounds interesting, although not cheap linky
bluekarin
Can't find anything about electric shock alarms, apart from one who gives you a shock when you press the off button. I think that would give you a complex and you'd never use it. I have found this one http://www.lazyboneuk.com/products/Vibrating-Alarm-Clock.html which sounds interesting.
We bought ES an alarm clock in the shape of a dumb bell that when it goes off he needs to do 30 reps with it before it goes off trouble is he doesn't like settin it Karen x
Rhapsody
My sons used to be awful at getting up, then they both discovered girls which meant they had to up their hygiene standards, now they get out of bed early to get the best of the hot water in their shower. Whoever snoozes loses and I think that is the key really, what are the consequences of not getting up on time?
Milly
We got the Philips one a couple of years ago after someone at work recommended it. The best thing about it in the winter is that your eyes have time to adjust to the light gradually, rather than having a painful moment when you turn the light on when the alarm goes off . hillfamily
Sorry, bit late to this, but I also have the Lumi Bodyclock one with the light that 'sunrises' for 30 mins before the alarm goes off. I've been using it for a few years and I wouldn't go back to a standard alarm
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
Rather than splashing out on a light one (personally, I'll sleep if it's dark or light) why not get a handful of cheap wind-up or electric/battery ones and scatter them round the room so you have to get up to turn them off (especially electric ones which just keep going) and set them to go off at five minute intervals. You can pick them up in pound shops, or this one from Ikea has some style as well as function: http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/search/?query=dekad If I HAVE to get up at an ungodly hour, that's what I do, it works, and it's affordable. dancing cloud
I have the same Lumie as Lesley and like it a lot (in as far as I like anything that wakes me up). Unfortunately the cats soon caught on to the notion that light=breakfast, so they tend to come and jump on me as soon as the light starts - so much for the gentle awakening! Lesley
- I know how you feel, I realised that Tali has cottoned on and started whining to be let out - I've had to set mine a bit later than usual.
Olly
Well, I'm a bit torn now - the Philips ones are reduced on Amazon, but the Lumie ones are on Boots online with special bonus points ... going to think about it over the weekend but I think I will definitely get one, and probably just a lamp as I'd rather replace my ancient clock-radio-alarm with a new digital radio, and I haven't seen one that combines the lamp and DAB yet. Thanks so much for all the suggestions and replies!
