Olly
I'm really struggling to wake up these days, and I keep sleeping through my radio alarm. I'm wondering about one of those 'sunrise' alarm clocks - does anyone have one, and do they really work? The ones I've looked at on Amazon don't seem to have great reviews. I never used to have a problem, but it's got really bad lately - I keep being late for work because instead of waking up at 6.30 when the alarm goes off, I'm just sleeping through it (it's not a case of pressing 'snooze', the alarm is too far away for that). I don't like being woken up by bells or buzzers, too scary first thing in the morning. Can anyone recommend anything? (Yes, I have tried turning up the volume, and going to bed earlier - doesn't seem to make any difference!).
The Dogmother
Lesley has one, Olly. She says that it's good.
Falkor
OH has threatened to buy me one of these http://www.iwantoneofthose.com/lifestyle-home/clocky-run-away-alarm-clock/index.html as I am a big fan of the snooze button. I spose if I have to hunt the clock out then i might stay up ......might just go back to bed though
Helly Welly
I have a 'sunrise' alarm clock. It starts to lighten approximately 30 minutes before the alarm time and i nearly always wake up before the beep, which goes off at the time i set it for. I too hate loud noises in the morning. It also helps me to go to sleep at night and stops me reading too long as the light can gradually darken for half an hour. I really like my clock and would hate to have a normal alarm clock as it would be just too scary.
Old Speckled Hen
My daughter sends me this text, "Mum, please please please wake me at 6.30. I just HAVE to get up"......... and I do
Goosey Lucy
I had a Philips wake up light for Christmas and it's one of the best presents I've ever had. It's one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-Wake-Up-Light-HF3475-01/dp/B002BA5FB6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=lighting&qid=1265128241&sr=8-1 You can even set how brightly the light comes on. Expensive for an alarm clock but well worth it on my opinion.

Lavenders_Blue
I've been thinking about buying one of these sunrise clocks for a while too, but always hesitated because of the price. Thanks for the useful feedback. I know it's a bit early to be thinking about it but I think it will be on the Christmas list!
Olly
My daughter sends me this text, "Mum, please please please wake me at 6.30. I just HAVE to get up"......... and I do If I send you my number, OSH, will you wake me up too ... Afraid a baby is ruled out for a number of reasons, poachedegg! Couperwife and Hellywelly, do you know what make your clock/lamp is? I am seriously tempted but as I said, the Philips one has got mixed reviews on Amazon. Blackrocksrock
Tried setting the mobile phone?? I know its noisy ish but it works on holiday so might just work at home too. I found after kids I just wake up anyway - bit drastic for an alarm though!
theherd123
Olly I bought a Lumi Light Alarm some years ago and its the best alarm I have ever owned. It's similar to this one here... http://www.bodykind.com/product.asp?CatID=67&ProdID=125 I wake up so gently and peacefully, much better then a huge noise & shock at 5.30am! Space Chick
Afraid a baby is ruled out for a number of reasons, poachedegg! An elderly terrier also does the job marvellously too My Henry usually wakes me up to go out to the garden between 5.30am and 6am, and on the rare occasions I don't hear him I get woken up to the sound of running water Not good, as this upsets him However, some people pay good money for alarms with sounds like waterfalls
Couperwife
mine is like this one linkity thing but with out the moon and stars (I would have liked moon and stars ) mine was a present a few years ago - and its great (I can cope without the moon and stars ) cathy x
Goosey Lucy
I think I can understand why the Philips one has mixed reviews. It can be a little fiddly to begin with but I wouldn't let that put you off. Mine came with a 30 day money back guarantee from Philips if you didn't like it. I wake up much less grumpy these days
Helly Welly
This is my one http://www.naturalcollection.com/products/lumie/bodyclock-classic-with-radio/ Needless to say, i did not tell OH how much it cost
Lesley
I have this Lumie - http://www.lumie.com/shop/products/bodyclock-advanced-200 Really easy to set and use and worth every penny! It doesn't work for my son though - he can sleep through anything and has slept through a big earthquake a few years ago in North Wales
Olly
Well, thank you all! Interesting - all four of those recommendations are for Lumie bodyclocks! The price is a bit - I am due to find out whether or not I get a payrise and/or bonus in the next week or so, maybe I'll wait and treat myself if I get one! If I have a train to catch or an urgent appointment I do use the mobile phone, but I hate waking up to something so obtrusive, it puts me in a bad mood! and I always worry so much that I haven't set it correctly, that I don't sleep properly. I never used to have any problem getting up, I think it's an age thing. Anyway, off to bed now in the hope I might get a proper night's sleep and not oversleep tomorrow - thanks so much for all the replies. I knew I could count on Omleteers! The Dogmother
I sleep very soundly, but am always awake before the alarm. I find that I need the shock of the alarm going off to get me going
PurpleTree
I really like the sound of these light alarm clocks, a gentle waking up would be lovely. Not like the one I had this morning, both boys awake at 5:30am, turned the landing light on and their bedroom lights, then they were bouncing on Danny's bed singing Jingle Bells. I've had a headache ever since, and typically Oliver's just fallen asleep on the sofa
Rhapsody
I got hubby a Phillips one for Xmas and we both love it- much less grumpy in the morning now.

If I have to get up for anything important I set the alarm reminder on the phone - BT don't advertise it as they used to, I can't even find it in the phone book now. I set it 5 minutes after the full sunrise just in case there has been a power cut in the night. As the sunrise usually wakes me in the first 10 minutes then I'm usually awake and up well before the phone rings, it still makes me jump though .
