alih
For various reasons I am intending to put an eglu or 2 in my WIR instead of my cube. I have 5 chooks at the mo and will vary from between 3 and 5 generally. 3 of my current 5 roost on the perches and never go in to sleep, not even in sub-zero temps. Do you think I could get away with putting just one eglu in the run? There will be plenty of perching space but I want to maximise the playroom aspect. I am just wondering whether it would be mean to only put one in, although I have seen many chickens crammed into a single eglu before when they need to keep warm. Honest thoughts please. Thanks
Patricia W
I think ANH has 5 in an eglu - or you could get another and expand? Tricia
Redwing
I have 5 in an Eglu and when the door is open and they are roosting of you look in you cant see a single one of them as they all pile up Others have bought two Eglus only to find that everyone sleeps in one anyway
chelsea
Others have bought two Eglus only to find that everyone sleeps in one anyway Exactly! We bought 2 eglus and they all kept piling in the orange one (6 hens) which included 2 big fat cochins.
prof
i had a for my & . then i got 2 orps so i bought a intending to introduce them slowly & thinking they would need the room when they are in the run when im on holiday (they free range all day). the introduction went so well they all crammed into the at night, and i agree with Redwing, they all cram into a corner anyway, leaving lots of space even for more i have now sold my and am getting a tomorrow ( )so that when im away they will have plenty of room to peck about in the extended run . if i was you id just go for one eglu, as they only need to roost in it as you have a WIR
bellekatz
I used to have 5 sleeping in one eglu as well! Only problem was if they all wanted to lay at the same time
Lewis
Another one thinking 5 will be fine in one eglu The only thing being you might need another nest box - maybe a cat carrier We bought another for the ducks, but that's different
alih
Well that's me decided then! Thanks guys - it will save me money and leave plenty of play space in the run. Now to dismantle my cube...must find instructions and try to be patient!
Minnie&Moose
Our 5 all chose to sleep together in 1 eglu for the last few months, even though they had 2 eglus in their bit of the garden. However, they all insisted on laying in the other eglu and would protest loudly if the preferred nest box was occupied Not sure what was going on there I only decided to change to a cube because I was fed up cleaning 2 eglus every week. Ain't Nobody Here
Bit late joining in, but I agree, one should be fine . I do indeed have 5 in one eglu and was just thinking the other day that there would be room for 5 more, the way they all cuddle up together . Olly
Well I've already taken advice from ANH and others on exactly this topic. I sold my Cube and bought an Eglu to go in the WIR, and I'm collecting three new chooks on Saturday. So as far as I'm concerned, five in an Eglu is just about right! They fold up awfully small at night!

sandyhas3chucks
covered cat litter trays make excellent spare nst boxes. Room for 2 and as it is designed to keep litter IN, then less nesting gets dragged ir scuffed out thanin a cat carrier.
flamingo
Why don't you like your cube out of interest?
alih
Oh I love the cube and it has served me very well for 16 months but I now have a WIR and it is a fairly tight fit width-wise so I would prefer to have something less bulky. AS I only have 5 chickens max at a time and half of them sleep outside I figured I could free up some space in the run for mroe perches etc and have an eglu instead. But when I had no WIR I my cube and extended run were perfect and really spacious.
